Flooring and concrete help

We're looking to either repair and refinish or completely replace our floors.  We'd also like to put in a stamped concrete patio in the backyard.  I've got 3 questions:

1) What kind of floor would you put in with two dogs?

2) Do you know of a reputable yet reasonable company to repair and refinish hardwood floors?

3) Do you know of a reputable yet reasonable company that does stamped concrete?

 Thanks!

Re: Flooring and concrete help

  • I can suggest some flooring if you are looking to completely replace yours.

We have 3 active dogs.  We've had our laminate floors for over 2 years and they have held up amazingly.  They're DuPont brand from Home Depot.

They weren't my first choice, but DH got them free from his old job, and we've been very pleased with how they've held up and how easy they are to clean.

These are the ones I have:  http://www2.dupont.com/Laminate_Flooring/en_US/products/patterns/braziliancherry.html

DH was able to install them himself and they were fairly easy (if you have a compound miter saw), but HD does offer installation as well.

I would take a look at Angie's List for your other flooring recs.  Good luck!

  • Thanks Jeni!  It's great to hear personal experience from a dog owner.

We are debating about repairing and refinishing the hardwoods, which are the original 1964 floors, or replacing them all together.  It's going to come down to A) cost and B) durability.  Whichever gets us the most bang for our buck wins, so we're in the research phase right now.  Thankfully H can do the installation if we decide to go with the laminate wood floor.

  • We just had our carpet taken out and put in wood. We decided to go with a strand bamboo which is a lot stronger than any hardwood. We got a great deal on it at Marion's in SE. They sometimes get limited quanitites of something that they can sell for a lot cheaper than it would normally go for. We paid $3.75 sq. ft. We had them do the delivery but it clicks together so if you have a handy husband he could easily do it himself. Not sure if they still sell the bamboo but they might have similar deals.

Or you could have someone give you an estimate to refinish your existing hw. That might be the more economical option.
