Anyone know how to crochet?
i'm looking for someone to help me learn how to crochet. i've got the basics down but i can't read patterns so i'm having problems making a hat. thx
Re: Anyone know how to crochet?
I don't know where you're at but I just took a knitting class at the Colonial Yarn Shop in Shiremanstown (by Camp Hill). It was only $25, they gave me the knitting needles and yarn and they were super nice. If you're in the area, I'd give them a call. I'm pretty sure the instructor said they have crochet classes too.
I've also heard several people say they learned by watching You Tube videos. I unfortunately am of no help. I am still trying to get the knitting down.
I just took a knitting class in York at the place called Uncommon Threads. They offer beginner crochet. I paid $15 for a 2 hour class and they give you (I think) 10% off on their supplies if you take a class. They have their class schedule online.

I crochet! But, I am self-taught so I would be kind of hesitant to give advice and stuff since sometimes I don't know if I am even doing it right. But, like pps said, there are other ways to learn. Youtube is a pretty good resource. I learned mostly through illistrated books that give step by step instructions on all the stitches. It's actually quite easy. As for reading patterns, that pretty much just takes practice. You just have to get used to what the abbreviations mean. Here's an example on how to read it (taken from this pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cheri-hat):
1. Ch 5 (chain 5) and join with slip stitch (sometimes abbrev. sl st, I think) to create circle 2. Ch2 (chain 2), dc 10 times in circle (double crochet 10x in the circle you mede in step 1)(place marker for beginning of round if necessary) 3. dc twice in each stitch around (20) (double crochet 2x in each stitch you made in step 2) And so on. Once you get abbreviations down, patterns aren't so bad and believe me, I was so intimidated by them the first time I saw one. I still every now and then run across an abbrev. that I don't know. Then all I do is just google it and I can usually find its meaning in a matter of seconds. I hope this helps a little. Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions. I will do my best to help!my read shelf:
