Deep Creek?

I know Baltimore is a good 2.5 hours from Deep Creek, but I was wonderng if any of you have been there recetnly.

I am currently planning a "girls weekend" (aka bachelorette party, but not a traditional one) for my sister.  I know she really wants to go to the beach, but a trip to Jersey or Dewey are out of the bridesmaid's price range at this point.

So I was doing some research and came across Deep Creek.  I haven't been there since I was about 10.  We aren't looking for much to do, just hopefully get some sun, hang out at the lake, and go out to eat.  Nothing crazy or involving penises, per her request.

Has anyone here been there recently, and where did you stay?  Any good restaurants?  There is a resort down there called WISP, but I don't think it is near the lake, which I would like to be walking distance from.

Any help is much appreciated!  Thank you!

Re: Deep Creek?

  • Not to be nosey, but when are you going and how much are you looking to spend? You can often rent places in OC/DE beaches during the shoulder season pretty inexpensively for the weekend. I can't imagine that you could go to DC for much less. Did you check out homeaway.com and vrbo.com?

  • Whisp is nice but you can get really nice houses on the same road as Whisp...there are some nice ones and are closest to where the 'action' is also Lakeshore drive has nice places..  Good PLaces to eat:  I forget the name but it's something Pine Lodge Steakhouse...it was yummy (we went on our honeymoon).  I also like Whil o the whisp-four seasons...on Wednesdays they had pasta mania night which is awesome (i think you said you were going on a weekend though).  Definitely go to Arrow Head Deli...they have wine and beer and YUMMY cinnamon rolls and Pittsburgh style sandwiches...also right near there is a UNO's and a great bar-I think it's Tiki something I can't quite remember the name but it's attached to UNOs...also Perkins is a great dinner type place for a greasy breakfast after a night of drinking!

Have fun!!!  Oh and Brenda's Pizzeria is a casual Italian place with great pizza by the slice!

  • I'm no help.  I just wanted to say OMG BSC LOVE.

  • We rented a cabin and took our dog there last fall and there really wasn't too much to do other than hike. There are places where you can rent boats and kayaks and Wisp has a canopy tour and alpine slide coaster thing. I don't have any restaurant recs for you since we mostly cooked and only ate out once at a casual bbq place where we could eat outside with our dog. Deep Creek would be fun if she's the kind of girl who likes to stay in and drink with friends but if she's expecting bars and nightlife I would take her to the beach.

Yes kind of...my hubby and I went out and had so much fun...and then other nights we stayed in a cooked...most places have hot tubs though so thats fun!  It really depends on what time of year you are going...we went in the fall and it was slowing down but over the summer it's bumping!  oh and Lakeside Creamery is awesome for ice cream!

  • Thanks for your replies!  Deep Creek is appealing because we live in Pittsburgh, so it's only about 2 hours away.  They also seemed to have cheaper rooms than places like Jersey or Dewey (I did not look into Ocean City).

She is adamant about no bar hopping, so if there are a few restaurants that would be fine.  I just think we're screwed if it rains one day.

We were planning on sometime in August (I know, primetime for summer rates!), and as far as budget, I was trying to keep it to about $200 a night, and other than WISP the houses and other hotels were around $250 a night, not including tax.

I'm also confused; is the lake in the state park, or do most hotels in that area have some kind of lake access/beach?

Thanks for the suggestions!  Where did you stay when you went?  I am finding some places won't rent for the weekend in August, there is a week minimum.

There really aren't beaches...if you are looking to lay near the lake looks for a property with a flat back yard...otherwise there really aren;t places to go.  There is a park there with a small beach...horseback riding is there too and is fun!  Also go to Swallow Falls State Park...you can hike and swim in the falls...it's fun! PM me if you have any other questions.  Both my aunt and uncle have places there (sorry they dont rent!) and we've been there at least once a summer so I am pretty familiar with it...it's also my territory for my job so I am there every fall for a week!

  • Thank you!  I would like to be more near the "action" that is there.  I also did not realize that about there not really being a beach.  I looked into the Will 'o the Wisp and it got mixed reviews for accommodations.  I also looked into the Inn at Deep Creek and the Suites at Silver Tree, they were a little more than I wanted to spend.
  • They have a beach area at Harrington Manor State Park. I haven't been to Deep Creek Lake Park in years so I'm not sure how the set up is there.
  • There's a beach area at the state park in Deep Creek.

Honi Honi Bar is the one attached to Uno's. Arrowhead is good, Brenda's is good, and Cornish Manor (closer to Oakland) is also good, and so is Annie's country Kitchen on 219 and Englanders has the best breakfast in Garrett County, I'm convinced (in Oakland) - its greasy but so good.

Wisp is actually fairly close to the lake - i mean the "mountains" surround the lake - its not like its not part of the lake or anything.  It does have a "fake" white water rafting course at the top of the mountain that is really cool looking.

Honestly the restaurants in general while decent, aren't worth the trip. you for the scenery, the hiking, the horseback riding, kayaking, renting a boat, that kind of stuff.

Is there stuff to do? Yes. Are you screwed if it rains? Yes. There's a movie theater but guess where everyone goes when it rains?

I love it out there - my parents have a house in Alpine Lake, which is off of Route 7 in West Virginia, about 25 minutes away from DCL, so we spend a lot of time out there. (also tends to be cheaper than DCL and has a beach and a lake and the lamest mini golf course ever haha, but the lake is smaller and does not allow power boats.)

I can see it being an awesome bachelorette party if she is adamant about no bar hopping or anything, just friends hanging out - but if it rains it would be crappy. But then again, if it rains at the beach, it's crappy too.

  • Thank you!  So I guess we will end up driving to Deep Creek Lake to go to the Lake.  I wish everything was in walking distance, but I guess that's why going to an actual beach with a boardwalk is better :)

We stayed at my Uncles place so it was pretty easy for us -and free- there is a comfort inn right in town...never stayed there before so I am not sure how nice it is but it's not right on the water.

  • I went to Frostburg State which isn't fair from Deep Creek.  I think the other girls covered everything there is to cover about Deep Creek.  I just wanted to also recommend Rocky Gap since it has a "beach."  There isn't any restuarants around rocky gap without driving 10 minutes, but they do have their own restuarants and bars on premises.  They also have a spa which I love!

They also have packages that include a night and spa treatments, or golf, etc.

  • I am looking to do a similar bachelorette party over memorial day weekend and was wondering if you ended up going there and if you have any suggestions on what to do/what not to do.
