XP: FEMA money

Back story: We lost our apartment in a flood last August and received $1100 from FEMA.  I think I remember the letters specifically stating that it was for relocation costs and not for the replacement of things lost in the flood.

DH received a call from someone today stating that more funding has become available and that if we could provide a list of what we lost and approximate cost to replace it we could receive some additional money.

It obviously was more than $1100 to relocate with deposit and first/last months rent, but then most of that was recouped from our previous landlord a few months later.

Do I still list everything we replaces as if the FEMA money was specifically for relocating or would you just list what costs we incurred above $1100?

Re: XP: FEMA money

  • If the original money was earmarked as "for relocation" then I would claim everything lost/needing replacement.  But I would be damn sure that is what the letter originally stated before making a laundry list of items for reimbursement.  Then again,  I'm a worry wart about the potential to be audited for this type of thing.

That's awesome FEMA is offering to help though!

Yeah, it was a total random phone call from them today.  I guess we had no idea there was more funding available and I'm shocked that they sought us out.  We were pretty lucky to be able to save most of it before the water came up.   Just lost a few pieces of furniture and things that are easily replaced.

  • That's great that it was more of inconvenience than a complete devastation.  I'm glad to hear you didn't lose more.

  • I say make a list of everything, just because w/ that money, I'm pretty sure, if they don't use it, they lose it. I bet that's why the called you. AND you could potentially get some new stuff!
