Hyman Seafood in Charleston- ? re wait time

We are going to be in Isle of Palms this weekend & were going to check out Hyman Seafood for dinner Sat night but I found out when I called that they don't do reservations and to get "priority seating" you have to come in person ahead of time, which I don't really want to do... anyone know what the wait time for a party of 2 might be on a Saturday night?
Thanks!

Re: Hyman Seafood in Charleston- ? re wait time

  • *cough Tourist Trap cough*

  • You will need to get there before 4pm unless you want to be there all night. Any later and the wait can be 2 hours or more.

I've heard that Hank's Seafood is a good option if you don't want to wait at Hymen's. Southern Living recommended it. Its in the market, near where all the horse and carriages line up.

  • Hyman's Seafood is nothing but a tourist trap!  When I worked at another restaurant in management, I interviewed a guy who had previously worked at Hyman's.  He flat out told me that their seafood comes in frozen, pre-breaded in bags ready to deep fry.  He also told me that he never saw a piece of local seafood come through the door.  You would get more for your money at Captain D's or Long John Silvers.

Hanks is great and they take reservations.  Also the Boathouse on breech inlet (by IOP) is amazing!  They have great views and their food is killer.  Carolina's (the same family as the boathouse) is downtown on Exchange street.  They too have great seafood options.  The Red Drum in Mt. Pleasant on coleman blvd. has great seafood as well.  I had scallops the other night and they melted in my mouth!

  • Thank you! GOOD TO KNOW!

I was thinking the Boathouse for one night (someone also recommended Sullivans on Sullivans Island?) but also thought it would be fun to go into Charleston one night--- only problem being we're really not much into Southern food, which a lot of the places I've looked at seem to be, we've been to Slightly North of Broad before (and really liked it, just wanted to try somewhere new) and I think my husband is not in the mood for getting dressed up in any way, LOL.

(I gave him 3 choices- Magnolia's, High Cotton or Hyman & he chose Hyman so I think he was sending me a message, but it is not related to price, so any other great more casual non-Southern recs would be appreciated!)

  • FIG, Basil's, Coast
  • Thanks- Our weekend was a big bust, we got to Isle of Palms Sat noon-ish and our room was not ready (check in was technically 4pm but the place did not seem crowded & usually when you get there early, hotels try to get your room cleaned quickly...?!), and 3 hours later, it was still not ready, they really didn't seem to care, and it was raining, not much to do there while we were waiting (we got lunch, drove around IOP & sullivan's island, got coffee, walked around the property, etc) & it was supposed to rain today so basically we gave up & decided to go to charleston but there was a food festival & everything there was booked so we drove all the way back to NC that afternoon! Ugh. Anyway, we are going to go back to charleston one of these weekends & if we go back to IOP, we'll be renting a house...

I will be hanging on to all these recs for next time, thanks :)
