I was just curious why your husband doesn't drive, if you don't mind sharing. I have a sister and an aunt who both don't drive and sometimes it gets annoying!
And there are lots of great cities with good public transpo. Not that I'm trying to get you to leave the area or anything, but Chicago and San Francisco come to mind. Especially Chicago, their CTA system is pretty awesome.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Re: ead1975
He's visually impaired - he was diagnosed with Stagardt's disease (aka juvenile macular degeneration) in junior high, so he was never able to learn. Basically, he needs a magnifier and a giant computer monitor to do his job, which doesn't translate well to driving.
I'm not going to lie, though - it still gets frustrating. Especially when all I want to do is have more than a glass of wine when we're out. (Like, say, at my department's holiday party, where wine would REALLY come in handy.)
And Chicago and San Francisco have both come up when we talk "what if?" And if we ever got to a point where we felt compelled to leave MA, those would be our two of our top choices to consider.. But I think we both feel like this is home, and it would be hard for somewhere else to replicate that, you know?
*butts in*
NYC has good public transit too. And it's not that far!
Ah, well that's a much better reason than my aunt and sister, namely that they just don't want to learn! You guys should hang out with me and DH; he doesn't drink (it basically makes him sick, he never gets buzzed--tragic, really) so I always have an automatic DD!
And I do hear you about this just being home. As I mentioned in another post today, I love San Francisco but I'm definitely torn between the Bay Area and the Bay State. Boston is just part of who I am.
Punky, it's funny that you mention NYC - we've been there a few times since we started dating, and the first day we're always like, "this is great! We could totally live here!" And then by the afternoon of the second day, we're all, "nope, no freaking way."
...I'm not sure why I just typed that in 15 year old girl speak. I'm blaming the cold meds.
And Rock, an automatic DD would be amazing. Of course, we don't have a car right now, so it's not an issue all that frequently. But when it's annoying, it's ANNOYING, heh.
I would only want to live in NYC if we made a bazillion gazillion dollars and could live in a big brownstone with a small yard in Greenwich Village.
So yeah. Not happening.
