I am heading to Door County with my boyfriend for a weekend in May. I have never been there so I am looking of things to do and a nice place to stay that is not too expensive. We are looking at going for 2 nights and 3 days and don't want to spend about $200 for 2 nights and another $200 for fun activities. Any ideas?
Re: Vacation in Door County
We went for a long weekend & did a lot of outdoorsy stuff that was free/low cost. Hiking @ Peninsula State park (all day, much to my surprise! Be prepared, wear great hiking shoes/boots, bring water & a picnic lunch or snacks in a backpack) its gorgeous there. Drove around to all the lighthouses on the peninsula. Toured wineries (some cost $ so we stuck to the free ones). Drove up to Northport & took the ferry to Washington Island, we didn't bring any transportation on the ferry (car or bike) b/c DH insisted we could walk the island, BIG mistake! If you go, bring a car or your bike!! B/c once you step off the ferry there is like nothing close by! LOL Would have been beautiful to bike around & see stuff.
We stayed @ Edgewater Resort which was really nice. One thing to be aware of is that nearly ALL the hotels/motels in DC are across the street from the water. So just outside our hotel door, was the highway, & we were there @ the end of Oct (not peak season) & the traffic certainly wasn't non-existant, I can't imagine what its like in the middle of the summer!
Connected to the resort is the Old Post Office Restaurant, which has a kick as$ fish boil. I highly recommend it! Def get to a fish boil somewhere if you like fish, fish boil is sooooo good!! Wilsons Ice cream parlor is supposed to be legendary, but it was closed for the season (as a lot of places are) when we were there.
One thing I really regret not doing, just b/c it wasn't the right time of year, was renting kayaks, but it was just too cold!
HTH! Have fun!
