Update

Sorry, I should have posted earlier to let you guys know what's going on over here. With so much happening, I've been haunting FB much more than the board the past few days. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who's reached out to me there (and here) and given support. It means so much.

I've decided not to evacuate for now. I think about 2,000 people here have decided to leave so far, so the base is emptying out a bit as they get flown out. I've been watching kids all week for those who are staying. C's been out on a couple of clean-up projects and working a lot. Things are sort of starting to settle into what will be the new "normal" for a while.

The nuclear reactor situation is still very troubling. I think we'll be safe up here, but it seems the base has contingency plans in place should that change. As produce and water is becoming contaminated down south, we'll be sticking to commissary shopping for a while (actually, we would anyway since Japanese resources are so scarce and we have enough on base). In the past couple of days the area has gotten some gasoline brought in to town, so that's helped things. Still no kerosene in sight, so we're staying chilly. Luckily it's almost spring, so hopefully there won't be much more snow this year.

The earthquakes are calming down overall, although we just had a 24 hour period where we got like 5 or 6 earthquakes over 6.0 in magnitude. They were all pretty far from Misawa, so they weren't crazy strong for us. Still plenty of shaking though. Hopefully it'll continue to calm down. I'm soooo over earthquakes!

That's pretty much it. We're basically just watching how things progress and waiting, trying to help where we can.

Thank you all again. Your kind words over the past 2 weeks have helped so, so much.

Re: Update

  • Thank you for the update, It occured to me today that I hadn't seen anything form you in a bit and I was planning on FB stalking you when I got home from work. I'm still sending T&P's and hugs and good thoughts for you guys.
  • Thanks for the update! Glad you guys are still staying safe... Hugs.
  • So good to hear from you and get an update from the ground. I thought of you today when I saw this article about Bay Area military family evacuating. Made me wonder what you decided. The images coming back from Japan are just astounding. I just can't believe the magnitude of the destruction. Wishing the best for you, the others on your base, and the rest of the country.
  • Oh good, I had asked Kim if she'd heard from you!  Thanks for updating.
  • Thanks for the update, P! Glad to hear things are improving but I can't believe how many earthquakes there have been! People would lose their marbles here (me included so kudos to you!) if we had that. Clearly a much more active earthquake zone than here! We'll keep thinking of you.
  • Thank you for the update. Since work has blocked FB, this my only mode of communication until I get home.

Take care of yourself and continue to update us.

  • I am glad to hear you guys are safe!  Hang in there!!!!!!!
  • Yes, thank you for updating. It is good to hear that you are somewhat ok (I suppose that is a relative term right now). You are doing such amazing things and you and your DH are in my prayers every day.
  • I've been thinking of you guys! Thanks for updating us. Hope you both stay safe out there.

  • It's so good to hear from you; I'm not a big FB person so I've been checking for updates here.  I'm happy to hear that things are starting to settle down a bit, though I'm really disturbed by the magnitude and frequency of the aftershocks you're still experiencing--I just can't wrap my head around that.

If there's anything that we can do here to help you out, please let us know or drop me an email (rocknvoll at gmail if you don't still have it).

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I'm glad you got a chance to update. I've been wondering about you too. I just can't imagine what everyone there is going through.
  • Thanks for the update.  We're all thinking of you- I saw mothers and children on the news who had evacuated and wondered what your current status was.  Keep in touch and be safe!

  • I don't frequent here much. But I remember seeing your post before about being in Japan. I'm glad you're ok!!! The AFN news radio said there's some 10,000 people who've volunteered to leave! I hope things don't force it to become mandatory evacuations. I know there's at least 10 pregnant women sent down here for care, again it was voluntary too.
