buy existing or build...

has now become the question of the month for us.

Previously, building where we want to live has been out of our budget. However, things have transpired such that it is within reach and having no experience with the real estate process when building (and selling a property first), I am nervous and looking for information.

Anyone here build a home?

Re: buy existing or build...

  • I have not built but I wanted to say good for you for having that option! That is really awesome. Hopefully someone will have some good experience to talk about.

It is my dream to someday have DH build us our "dream" home. We'll see what happens, that would be waaaay down the line, but will hopefully be a possibilty.

  • well, it definitely wouldn't be our dream home, but it would be a little more tailored to our specifications than an existing. I am just wary of the whole construction process....
  • FWIW, my mother built about 12 years ago and loved the whole process. She had a great experience, worked with a great company, and ended up with exactly what she wanted. Good luck making the decision!
  • Good luck w/ whatever you decide Heather!

I have seen my parents do it both ways & they each have their perks & headaches.

How are you & Miss Molly doing?

  • I don't have any personal experience building, but that is very exciting!!  The only advice I have is to really be picky about your builder to make sure you get a good one and really read the contracts, etc.  I am in the contracts field so I always push that!!  ;-)  Good luck!!
  • Good Luck with whichever you choose!  How exciting either way.  I would love to build but I have heard a lot of headache can be involved with building.  I would make sure you trusted the people building, got references, etc.  A lot of builders try to skimp on things and try to get things done quickly.  Good Luck!

  • It has been a while since I have posted but DH and I are building a house right now. It is a unique situation because my father is the builder -- however I am so happy with our choice. We are able to build something brand new for a price that we could never buy a comparable house. Sweat equity can go a long way. The thing that is harder with a construction is the loan process. It is very detailed and you must complete the work (usually in 5 steps) before any money is distributed. If you have any other questions page me and I would be happy to help!
  • we bought existing that was also new construction...sorry I can't be more helpful!  We did get a lot of say when finishing came along so it was totally worth it!
