Plumbing followup - warning, very whiny

So the 2nd plumbing company just left and it's unanimous, we bought the Money Pit.  Our pipes are galvanized and we are going to have to do a repipe to the entire house.  He just showed me where he's going to be putting the holes in our walls, inside and out Crying.  Our first quote was for 5,900.  We are waiting on the second quote because we are pretty sure they will take a significant amt off that.  The second company repiped H's bosses house for 3,700.  They used to do all the plumbing for our restaurant.  We recently changed plumbers and they aren't happy about that, but that was a decision made in CA, not on the store level, so they should still hook us up however they can.  The even worse news is I'm not even going to get the new tile I was thinking I was going to get.  Like, ever.  Because I will never be able to afford it after this Crying  And to top it off, I have a hangover today because we had so much fun last night at the Lauryn Hill concert.  Boo.  But when I ask myself the question,"was it worth it?" the answer is yes :)

  • Ouch!

As long as the estimates are free keep getting more estimates. $5900 sounds extremely high. How many baths is your house?

  • I agree, I have never looked into repiping before because this would only happen in my worst nightmare, but 6k seems pretty steep!  We have 2 baths.  OMG, I am actually kind of lauging about this because it is so tragic.

I'm telling myself the same thing.

  • I'm sorry, Sara.  Surprise house expenses are no fun.  I hope that the second company can come up with a much better offer for you!
  • Well, we got our second quote.  3,200.   Almost half of the original companys quote for 5,900.  Plus the 5,900 didn't include permits and the 3,200 does.  We will start on Tuesday morning.  3,200 is a ton of money, but I guess the good thing about the first quote is that the new one seems like pocket change!

That sounds about right. I cant believe they wanted to charge you $5,900 without permits. That is crazy.
