Good Sam vs. St.Joe's ??

Did anyone deliver at either of these hospitals?  These are my two options for delivery.  I'm not able to do the tours until the beginning of May but I'm just looking to see if anyone had any experiences to share.

If you delivered there, did you take your childbirth class there?  And if so, was it helpful or should I look into taking another type of class?

Re: Good Sam vs. St.Joe's ??

  • I delivered at St Joes and took their class and tour. The class was ok, we did an all day Saturday class, but I already knew I wanted an epidural and I'm a nurse so most of the stuff they covered I knew but it was helpful for Dh to know what to expect If you want a natural or med free birth I would suggest taking a different class. I wanted to deliver at a hospital with a high level NICU for the baby for "just in case". I was low risk pregnancy but you never know, he was doing fine with the labor and then showed some signs of distress and the NICU team was there to see him when he first came out and check him over. I went to St joes since I work there but I did school rotations through Good Sams LDR unit too and both are fine. I had good experiences with my nurses, my only complaint (and it really isnt that big of a complaint) was they had a lot of deliveries/laboring mom so they had to call in more nurses so I did have to wait a bit in triage before moving to LDR. And my labor progressed fairly quickly. (i had him 5 hours after my contractins started) and I labored at home for an hour before going in. So Im glad he wasn't born in triage and I had enough time to enjoy my epidural. hth

  • I think Tay just delivered at Good Sam....is that the one on McDowell and something in Phoenix? HAHA Sorry, I'm not good with that area.

If it is, she thought it was Ghetto (I thought it was nice) but loved the staff. One thing I noticed when I went to visit her was that her room was SUPER small.

  • I know nothing about St.Joe's but have heard some great things about Good Sam.  My cousin delivered there and was very pleased with the staff's flexibility to her birthing desires.
  • good sam - i was born there!! but that was in 1986 hahaha. my mom had her brain surgery there and the staff is great. they offer valet parking too! also the cafeteria food is pretty good - we have been there for DAYS, WEEKS, and TWO WHOLE MONTHS and really become familiar with the entire hospital. -if you get lost call me haha.

st. joe's - my sister had her baby there. one thing i didn't like was parking!!! have family be prepared for a long walk. the labor/baby area of the hospital is totally separated from the main hospital like different building if i remember correctly. the rooms are spacious there and the nurses are very attentative (sp?). my sister took her birth class there and she loved it!

  • I have had procedures done at St. Joes a few times and have been very pleased there. I worked for Banner for many years, and regardless of the facility, I would not give them the satisfaction of being a patient there.

I second a lot of this. I delivered there 6  months ago and was really impressed with our care. Our nurses were wonderful and I loved the feeling of security that they had a NICU just in case. I did the tour, which I thought was helpful, and the all-day Saturday birthing class, which I didn't find helpful at all. After 8 months of reading and researching and thinking about my birth plan, I just thought the class was very basic and I didn't learn much. But for those who aren't neurotic like me and don't do tons of research about every little thing, then you might find it helpful. ;)

  • Stacy pretty much answered for me.  lol

Just delivered there, and I loved it.  I do consider it slightly ghetto (there's a strip club two blocks away...lol), BUT the nursing staff was PHENOMENAL!  I loved every single nurse we had, and its because of the care we received that has me considering this hospital for future deliveries.  Despite the location and age of the hospital, the accommodations are not that bad. I didn't take their childbirth class, b/c we planned to deliver at Shea.  The material we covered in the class we took at Shea was still pertinent and helpful; I would take a class, regardless of location.

The labor and delivery room was exceptionally nice; like better than Scottsdale Health Care nice...  It was spacious and had a nice couch for the dad.

The postpartum floor has not been renovated (from the looks of it).  The room was significantly smaller than L & D; not all rooms are private (ours was); and daddy accommodations are hard to come by - Casey was fortunate to get a cot.  When we first got to the room there was only a hospital bed and two folding chairs.  LOL

Our L & D nurse held my hand while the doctor stitched me up, b/c Casey was in recovery with Lucy.  And all of our postpartum nurses were very tentative.  They taught us how to swaddle, change dipes, and answered every question/concern we had.  They were all amazing and felt like family by the end of our stay.

I vote for Good Sam  Big Smile  (ps - try the pancakes if you do deliver there)  heehee

  • Thank you all for the advice!

I guess we are going to tour both and then decide but it doesn't seem like either will be a bad choice.
