I learned something new today

Regarding GM fresh produce. When shopping for fresh produce, you can tell if it is GM by checking the little four digit PLU code(the one that tells the cashier how to ring up fruits and vegetables)on the sticker that they attach to the produce. If the code is preceded by an 8, the produce is GM.

Organic produce is indicated by a 9 prefix on the PLU sticker.

Re: I learned something new today

  • I knew about the 9, but not the 8. Thanks!

  • Last i checked, though, it's not required that the 8-prefix be used for GM produce; it's optional.  So if you see the 8 you know it's GM, but its absence isn't a safeguard.

  • yep, i know that 5 digits starting with an 8 are GM, but i have never seen that anywhere. i don't think any company would admit to that.

Yeah, this is true unfortunately Crying The only way to be sure it's not GM is to buy organic.
