Cord Blood/Cord Tissue Storage?

Are you (did you) do this?  I'm torn- I know the goal is to not have to use it, but gosh I'd feel horrible to find out that $2500 could have saved my daughters life.

Re: Cord Blood/Cord Tissue Storage?

  • I am in the same boat (in fact I just asked my Bump board about it!) I feel like it's a lot of money... but the money could be well spent if God forbid something happened that medically could have been helped with cord blood.

    Still thinking about it...

  • We've researched this as well. I want to do it but with everything we have to buy for this baby we just don't have the funds. So we decided to donate this time around and save the cord blood on our next child. Our insurance used to cover this but the company switched plans and its no longer covered.

  • It is such a hard decision to make.  We are still talking about it and doing research, I just honestly wish it wasn't so much money.  Like Jen said we are not sure if there will be room in the budget to do it.

  • I think were going to do it. DH is pretty sold on it (and he's incredibly cheap, and never an emotional buyer). He said he couldn't imagine looking at her in the future with an illness knowing it was only a couple thousand dollars that could have prevented it. I also spoke with some friends who made good points about what they may be able to do with her cord blood/tissue in her lifetime (generating organs for transplantation, joint repair, etc). I think because were adopting and neither one of us would likely be any type of match for her DH feels this is an alternative.

  • Jenn, in your scenario I would do the same thing. I love that your H can see the benefits and is insisting on it. I would do the same thing in your case.

I looked into this the first time around...AZ is a state that doesnt have a cord blood bank, so you have to fill out a bunch of forms a head of time in order to be approved to donate out of state. Check out the forms online first, because I missed the deadline.
