E-readers? What is better?

I am wanting to purchase a Kindle, but is it better than the others out there? I want to be able to read it everywhere, so outside in the sunlight is definitely what it needs to be able to do without a huge glare.

I am pretty much deciding between the Kindle or the Nook...also, are you able to get any free books from anywhere?

Re: E-readers? What is better?

  • Have a kindle and love it,but others who have nooks love those also. The eink is great and reading in direct sunlight is awesome.  Do you know someone who has one of each so you can see the difference?  Nook also allows library lending I believe, but kindle does not.

I have a Nook, and I LOVE it.  You can download books from the library and load them on the Nook or the Sony eReaders, but not the Kindle.  I suggest going to try them out - Best Buy has all of them, or Target has Sony and Kindle, and Barnes and Noble has the Nook.

The Kindle is great for reading in the sun. It's just like reading a book. The other E-Readers I've seen have a huge glare kind of like some computer monitors/laptop screens.

The Kindle has some free books, but I haven't paid more than $9.99 for a book.

  • I love my kindle. I think the thing that I love most about the kindle is the no glare. It reads just like paper. It took me a while to warm up to the idea of an e-reader so this was a nice transition.

  • I love my nook - I am not a fan of the kindle AT ALL.

Best Buy has both on display so you can feel them both and see which you prefer. Seems everyone who has one or the other prefers theirs; so they're probably pretty darn close. (You def want to compare the reg nook, not nook color.)

  • My library and the Library of Philadelphia ($15/yr for non-residents) have a decent e-book selection, so I download a lot there. I haven't paid for many e-books. I also share with friends.

  • The new NookColor is an awesome device but if you want something for reading outside I would recommend the original Nook. I've had mine for 2 years now and love it. Best part is on the original Nook you can shop for books anywhere because it has 3G built in to the price so you're not paying for it monthly.

I've used it a lot on hikes because my hubby is a photo bug and once he finds a subject he could stay there for a good 20 min! lol It has a great battery life on the original and I've never had an issue with glare. Plus you have the added bonus that most cities have a B & N if something goes wrong with your Nook.

  • I have the original Nook with just wifi (no 3G). I decided on the Nook because of the library book compatibility. I haven't bought a book yet!

  • I love my Kindle. It kept a charge for three months which is unbelievable. It's also almost too easy to order new books. ^_^

  • I'm obsessed with my nook.  Best thing I have ever bought.
  • I have a Kindle and I'm in love with it. The Kindles use E ink which makes it much easier on the eyes. (The Nook Color, in contrast, uses a LCD screen, the same technology on a cell phone screen) It's basically the same technology ink jet printers use, but the ink isn't put on the page permanently, so it is like reading an actual book. Due to this, there is no glare when reading in the sun (which is awesome for me; I always had trouble reading paper books in the sun because the paper was too bright). The battery life is amazing. I read a lot and it lasts for over a month. I have the Kindle 3 (wifi only) and it is awesome.

Amazon has a large library with free books (thousands of titles), but I will admit that most of them are published independently or are out-of-copyright titles (e.g., Pride and Prejudice,  Dracula). A lot of the free promotional titles, books that they offer for free to drum up interest, tend to be romance novels, so if that is your thing, lucky you! However, this lack of free titles doesn't really mean that you don't have any options. Amazon recently enabled lending between Kindle users. Not all books are eligible, it's up to the publisher. A site has already popped up to allowed you to lend anonymously to people you don't know: lendle.me

In short, Kindles are awesome and could give you everything you need. Smile

  • I just pre-ordered the newest Kindle. It is being released tomorrow (4/27/11). I chose the Kindle because my grandma has one and absolutely loves it and I can share books with her. Also, the price for pre-order is only $114 so you can't beat that! I was going to go with the Nook but being in Florida I needed something that did not have a glare. I was looking into the Nook Color but I already have a smart phone and iPod so I did not need another device to keep me connected.
