What is the going rate for babysitters and Mother's helpers? I am going to have our next door neighbor (she's 16) help me out for a couple hours on Saturday so I can study in peace. I haven't babysat in about 10 years so I don't know the rates anymore! Thanks!

Re: Babysitters
For 1 child while you are home $5-7 should be sufficient. I use to babysit/nanny and would get $5 while parents are home. If parents went out and it w ould be late (past 11) they would generally do $10 and if they were just going out for a little and would be home at a decent hour $8.
I also never negotiated with them and told them $X when they would ask. I would always tell them what they felt is sufficient and they could afford.

We paid $12 an hour for one of the teachers from Lily's daycare, so for a 16-year-old neighbor who isn't making a living, I'm gonna say $5-7.
Sidenote: My friend's 13-year-old niece told me she gets paid $20 an hour from her parents to watch her kid brother. Then she offered to watch Lily. I said thanks, but I can't afford you!
My silly Lily is almost 4.
This is similar to what I would pay for your situation. Having DD's teacher or another adult watch her while we were gone or out late, I would pay more. My favorite babysitter is H - he's free!
That's not babysitting, that's called parenting!
Maybe you should send him that memo. :
I hereby instruct you to junk-punch him if he ever refers to watching his child as "babysitting". That's a memo he should understand.
