Interview Tips

I found out a couple weeks ago that my current job (which is through a temp agency) is going to end in the middle of May because the company is moving and didn't get approval to take their temps with them.  So I've been applying to places like crazy and have an interview tomorrow for a front desk/receptionist position for a pediatric dental office.  I feel like during interviews I always get shy or just smile and nod too much lol so I'm looking for some tips.  I've been on a lot of interviews, but just want to switch it up a bit.

What do you typically say when asked what your strengths/weaknesses are?  Are there any things you make sure to say during an interview?  Is it better to be outgoing and straight forward, or passive and sweet?  Any tips are greatly appreciated.  Thanks ladies!

  • Sorry for the 2 posts prior to this...TN went nutty.  Anyway for my strengths I usually say that I am well-organized and have strong ability to multi-task,  I am also great under pressure.  My weakness is that sometimes I take myself too seriously and become consumed by a project.

Also I try to come across strong but not over-baring.  I dont want to seem pushy but more relatable.  Trying to be too sweet comes across as fake or as a pushover

  • You definitely want to be strong and confident, as if you are confident you can do the job well, that gives them a good reason to hire you.  I tend to tailor my strengths and weaknesses for whatever the job is, but always make the weakness something that is secretly a strength for that particular job.  Often for my weakness I say I'm too detail orientated.  Also you want to be sure to ask them questions as it typically makes you stand out.  Plus they are not just interviewing you, you are interviewing them to make sure it is a place that you would enjoy working at, so ask about office climate.  If you get a chance to talk to people there (i.e. the receptionist on your way in or out) ask them what they like best and least about working there.

  • Ditto pp's.

I think it's good to come across as confident and outgoing.

Like Karen, I usually say my weakness is that while I'm detailed orientated, sometimes I find it hindering because I can focus on minute details vs. the big picture.

Strengths are always that I work well with others, but that I'm also self-motivated and can work well by myself too.  I'm organized, detailed orientated and goal focused.

    GL!

  • As someone who just finished conducting a load of interviews, one of the things that stuck out was when people talked too much.  Answer the question fully, but don't ramble.

Also, as an interviewer, I totally understood being nervous, so don't worry about that too much.  Just smile, make eye contact, and ask questions!

  • I've been on the interview committee several times at my work so hopefully I can help.

Definitely come off strong and confident, but don't act like you already have the job in the bag.  Be prepared when they ask if you have any questions about the job, even if it is something small.  Sometimes that can start a whole conversation.

I agree w/nfp147, the interviewer expects you to be nervous, but I don't think any interviewer wants to make you uncomfortable so just know that they want you to be comfortable.  I know when we interview I am looking for someone who is a good fit both skill wise and personality wise.

Good luck!  My fingers are crossed!  They would be lucky to have you :)

  • Thanks so much!  I'll keep all of this in mind.  My interview is in 45 minutes, so I'll let you all know how it goes.

  • So the interview went well.  I tried to be really open and ask questions.  I also threw little side notes in there like that I am one of 7 kids, the oldest girl, so I?m used to dealing with kids (it?s a pediatric dental office), that I volunteer in my spare time, etc, just to give her an idea of who I am.  She seemed to really like me, and when I left I thanked her for taking the time to meet with me and she said, ?it was my pleasure, trust me? so I think that?s a good sign; she said she?d also be able to pay me what I was asking.  She said she?s interviewing the rest of the day but will call me either way by the end of the day.  The only thing is, I don?t know if it is a place I?d want to work.  It was extremely busy and hectic, and she said it was always like that.  The insurance is really expensive, I?d have to buy my own scrubs that I?d be required to wear every day, and it seems like it?d be a really strict work environment.  Then again, my temp job is over in the middle of May, so I guess if I am offered a permanent position, even if it?s not something I want, I?d be dumb not to take it.  Grrrrrr?I?m tired of being a grown up.

  • Wow!  Sounds like it went great and would be a perfect fit!  How awesome that they can pay you what you asked.  Busy and hectic place of employment = job security.  It's a good thing, trust me!  Insurance is expensive everywhere.  It's better than no insurance.  And I wish I could buy a few pairs of scrubs and have a "uniform".  It would save me money and time spent figuring out what I was going to wear every morning. :)

I hope it works out for you!  Glad you get to find out today!  Keep us posted.

  • Good news!  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.  And, I agree with Brooke, being busy means you'll have security - and it usually makes the day go fast!

  • Wow, sounds like it went very well!  It's also awesome that you'll know so soon instead of that annoying lag of should I call, did I miss a call, etc lol  I'd be frustrated at first by the strict envirnment and needed to purchase the scrubs, but all in all it's totally worth it for a perm position with the pay you want.

    Great job!!

  • I'm obviously really late to the party on this one!

Xan - I'm glad the interview went well!  I completely agree with the others, that a busy job is SO much better than the alternative (in job security as well as making the day go by faster).

Also, insurance is ridiculous no matter where you go now, so I wouldn't pass on this for that reason.

And, last, my husband wears scrubs to work most days and I must say I am incredibly jealous.  He doesn't have to think about what to wear AND he doesn't have to spend money on nice clothes!  And from a female perspective, you can wear comfortable shoes every day and not be judged!

Let us know when you hear something!

  • Yay! I'm glad the interview went well. And I can't wait to hear that you get the job. I agree with all the PP about insurance being really expensive, but at least its cheaper than Cobra or self-insured. I really hope you get it and find out the despite the hectic work environment you love it.

  • I am so glad that your interview went so well! I agree with pp' s, insurance is expensive everywhere and having it is better than not having it. I love being busy all day it always makes the day go by so much faster.

I wear a uniform to work and I have to say, that is the best part of my job. I love that I know exactly what I am wearing every day!

  • Well I never got a call.  She said she'd call yesterday evening either way, but I never got a call so I assume I didn't get the job.  I'm not heart broken or anything considering it wasn't my ideal job, but it still kind of stinks.  Oh well, on we go Smile  Thanks so much for all of your support and encouragement!

  • Aww Xan, sorry to hear it, but I wouldn't rule it out just yet.  As Brooke mentioned, she may have gotten tied up and wasn't able to make the call.  Either way, I'm one of those that believes everything happens for a reason.
  • So I just got the call from the job I interviewed for, and I didn?t get it. She said it was between me and one other candidate out of the 35 people they interviewed, but the other person had previous dental office experience so that?s what gave them the edge, and they wanted to know if they could keep my resume on file, blah blah blah. I?m really not even upset about it at all though. Like I said, it seemed like a place I wouldn?t really like to work. They had me fill out an application before the interview, and I literally almost left twice during those 10 minutes because I just knew it wasn?t what I wanted as soon as I walked in and got an idea of the place. I did however feel like I gave a much better interview than I ever have before, so at least I?m getting better at that and learned something from it. Onto the next thing...Big Smile
