GL toiletries

Hi! I'm sorry to keep on asking questions. As I said earlier, we are changing our lives into a GL life. My next step is toothpaste, soaps, shampoo, conditioners and deodorants. What do you like?

Re: GL toiletries

  • I can honestly say, it's easier to go green when you do it slowly and try out products that appeal to you.  I seem to like some of Dr. Bronner's items.  Noah's Naturals...I like them enough to use up what I have but not enough to buy again.  I have been following a blog "Heavenly Homemakers."  She's a stay-at-home, home-schooling mom of several boys and she inspires me.  I'd read through some of her articles.  She explains why she has switched to some items...she covers everything from food and cooking methods (whole foods, organic when possible) to toiletries (shampoo and tampons).  You may have to search around but you can find a lot of opinions on things and recommendations. Good luck.
  • toothpaste and floss: EcoDent powder.  It was a little odd to use powder at first but now it's strange going back to paste.

Soap: I use an oatmeal bar soap in the shower that's made and sold locally.  For hand soap, we use Kiss My Face liquid soap.  Our co-op sells it in bulk.

Shampoo and conditioner - 2 Tbsp baking soda mixed with 1 c. water for shampoo.  4 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar mixed with 2 c. water for a conditioner.

    Deodorant: crystal deodorant stick

  • Thank you so much! What is her blog link?
  • I think it is http://www.heavenlyhomemakers.com  if not, google "heavenly homemakers"
  • Good for you!

My favorite toothpaste is jason brand sea fresh toothpaste.  Regardless what you choose, it will take a week or so to get used to toothpastes that aren't so sweet.

Hand soap: dr bronners + water + essential oil, bar soap (variety)

Shampoo and conditioner: varies; right now i'm using avalong organics lavender shampoo and trader joes tea tree tingle conditioner.  Not the best, but affordable and they work.  I also don't wash my hair very often.

  • Toothpaste - I use regular toothpaste, so I'm no help there.

Soap - We just use Method liquid soap.  Not the best as far as being "green," but better than the regular stuff I suppose.

Shampoo/Conditioner - I love Kiss My Face and Burt's Bees products

Deodorant - I've been pretty happy with the Crystal liquid roll-on.  It still doesn't work as well as regular deodorant for me, but it's the best I've found so far.

  • I would try doing one toiletry at a time.  So when you run out of shampoo, buy a new green one, rather than dumping everything and buying new.  In my experience, it took us awhile to figure out which brand worked for us.  If we had done all the products at once, I think it would have been overwhelming.

That said, here's what we use.  DH is allergic to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), the ingredient in bath products that makes it foam.  So everything is SLS free.

    Toothpaste - Tom's of Maine

Soap - Dr's Bronners.  Best soap ever, you can't go wrong here.

Shampoo and Conditioner - Avalon Organics

Deoderant - I tried every single natural brand out there.  Tom's, Audrey's, Crystal, Kiss my Face, and a bunch of others I can't remember.  None of them worked.  And I'm not a stinky gal, they just plain didn't work. So I'm back to Secret.

  • Toothpaste: Toms of Maine. Despite what many people believe, they have floride, whitening, etc options. Also, the flavors are so yummy!

Soaps: Regular ol? Kirk?s castile soap. Love the lather ? great for shaving! Dr Bronner?s is great if you prefer liquid. I use the castile for most everything, but I also like Kiss My Face products.

Shampoo/Conditioner: I use California Baby (yep, baby shampoo) and Dessert Essence coconut conditioner. DH is allergic to most natural products because of ingredients like lavender, so I?m limited.

Deodorant: I don?t use any. DH prefers the Toms of Main unscented roll-on.

  • Toothpaste for me & the kids: Burt's Bee's
