Moving to Richmond

I'm moving to Richmond in late April from out of state.  I'll be working downtown in the Jackson Ward area.  Could anyone recomnd some safe, nice aprtment complexes or areas to live in.  I'm not particular-I wouldn't mind living downtown or in suburb as long as its pretty safe.  Are there any areas/neighborhoods in ichmond that I should avoid?

Thanks!

Re: Moving to Richmond

  • I wouldn't recommend the Jackson Ward neighborhood!  What kind of price range or distance from work are you looking to stay within?
  • I'm looking between the $600 - $800 dollar range.  I've been looking at the Hunt Club apartments in Richmond.  Do you know anything about those? Or do you have other areas to recomend?
  • If you want to be closer to the area you'll be looking, the Fan and museum district have some nice places. You can get an efficiency or 1 bedroom for about $800. Try looking on craigslist. There are always tons of listings, especially right now because all the college kids are moving in May and June.

  • I would not recomment moving to Hunt Club.  I have lived there twice and also been in this area for 10 years.  When I moved out in 2009, the air condition for the building did not work and it was June!  It didn't work at all in May.  They have air/heating systems that they control whether it is heat or air condition and they usually don't have the air condition up and running until May (If it even works them).  I stayed sick most of the time due to the mold in the vents.  The day I moved out, it was 105 degrees in my apartment and when I took my coats out of the coat closet, it was a wall of black mold!!  Go to apartmentratings.com to check out the ratings of the communities before you go.  I agree with the other post.  Jackson Ward is not the best of areas but I had a girlfriend who lived in the fan and loved it.  Depends if you want to be in the city or the county.  Keep in mind, personal property taxes in the city are REALLY high on vehicles.  The county of Henrico is the cheaper of the two on taxes.  I hope this helps!
