XP Can you please help a Jersey girl who will be visiting?

Hello Ladies!

I'm not sure if this belongs here or on the Orange County boards.  Forgive me if I selected the wrong forum.

When DH was in the Marines he was stationed at Camp Pendleton.  We're coming back for a short visit / reunion in July.

The best deal on flights I could get sends us from Philly to Ontario Calif on a Thursday night  We get in around midnight PST.  After working all day our bodies will think it's 4 am.  We're probably just going to get a cheap hotel at the AP to sleep, then pick up a rental car in the morning to drive to San Diego / Sea World etc. where we will spend the next night in a nice hotel there.  The idea is to go out have a nice dinner & not have to worry about driving.

The reunion is Saturday night so back in the car to Oceanside CA for Sat., Sun & Mon until we leave to fly out of John Wayne.  I guess we'll hang out with his buddies and go to the pier in Oceanside which appears to be all there is to do there.

Am I crazy?  I haven't been to Southern Calif in 20 years.  My friend lived near Anaheim & we'd do long day trips to San Diego.

Map Quest says its about 110 miles from the Ontario AP to San Diego along I-15  It's about 35 miles from San Diego to Oceanside and finally about 50 miles from Oceanside to John Wayne.   To fly more direct routes like from Newark / NYC to either John Wayne, LAX & or San Diego proper adds about $200 pp to the costs of the flight.

WWYD?  TIA

  • That idea isn't crazy, but I'd check what the penalty would be from the car rental company to return the car to a different airport.  I did this in Arizona last week, and it was $150, in addition to the rental fee.

You'd want to avoid driving from Ontario to San Diego during peak rush hour (7-8:30am or 4-6pm), unless you love traffic.

  • I already checked.  With 2 of the rental car companies there is no penalty.  There are big penalties with some others.

We were thinking about leaving from Ontario around 9:30 -- 10 am.

  • If you head down from Ontario around 10am you could stop in Temecula at one of the wineries for lunch.

There are quite a few things to do in North County--you dont have to spend all your time in Oside.  You can check out Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach.  You can also take Amtrak up to San Juan Capistrano and check out the Mission.
