DS had his 4 month well visit yesterday

And his pedi has referred us to an allergist. She think he is allergic to one of our pets, she says most likely the bunny but possibly the dog.

I feel like I can't breath just thinking about it.

Re: DS had his 4 month well visit yesterday

  • Oh gosh.  I am so sorry.
  • Oh poor kid! There are definitely things you could do though to try to help with the pets. I had (have) horrible allergies (was tested at 8/9 months old) and always had pets.

Does he have carpet in his bedroom? Good thing is that you are hopefully moving and can kind of look for certain things that would help with reducing allergies (newer houses, wood floors, certain types of heating systems that don't scatter the hair/ dust as much).

We have all hardwood floors in our house, but we do currently have forced hot air which is no good. Ugh. I just hope that even if he has pet allergies, there will be a way to manage them.

  • Hopefully! We're hoping our little one has DH's immune system and not mine...  I think there are some tips in the Pets board FAQ about allergies.

    Good luck with the allergist!

  • Oh no.

Did she have any suggestions (besides getting rid of him, which is always the first thing they say).

PittieBoo went through this with her DS- you can try posting on Pets.

Well first she was all "Can you get rid of the rabbit and see what happens? They're highly allergenic" and when she could tell I wasn't down for banishing my pets for any kind of trial-run, she said we should go to the allergist. His pedi seems to think we can go a blood test at the allergist since he's been exposed to the pets his whole life that the reaction will be positive in a blood test even though he's so young.

It's especially weird because the kid has had trouble breathing his entire life. And it has always been "Oh it's amniotic fluid" or "He must have a little cold" or "The air is dry." Suddenly it's "Wait... he's 4 months? And he's still having trouble breathing? You should get rid of your pets." Um no. I'm frustrated that it went from not a problem to no more pets in one day.

Hopefully the allergist will be more helpful. I googled her and she gets fabulous reviews.

  • Oh good, I'm so glad you found a great allergist. Poor little guy.

I personally think pedis are too quick to jump to allergies- and it's always the pet's fault!

What did she expect- you to throw your bunny outside for 3 weeks to see if DS would just magically clear up?

  • He sees his GI in a couple of weeks, too, and I'm going to ask her about the breathing thing, too. My little sister said this weekend "J breathes like a serial killer in a horror movie" haha but it might be an actual respiratory issue rather than allergies. In fact, his relflux could quite possibly be related to some kind of bronchial issue.

He's always congested and spitting up mucous, which I guess is an allergy indicator. We'll see! Either way, it'll be good to have a relationship with an allergist established before he's 6 months and we look to start solids.

I also looked it up, and I guess it takes quite a while to get the pet hair and dander out of the house enough to see improvements anyway. Like months. Especially with forced hot air. So sending the bunny to my mom's won't accomplish anything. Plus she might never give him back, she loves him because he's so cuddly.

  • Oh my goodness.  I hope they are able to get it all figured out soon
