BM dress vent

I just ordered a BM dress for a wedding I am in. I got measured and (remember I just had a baby) the woman at the shop said my measurements put me in a size 16.

Seriously. I weigh 120 pounds. I'm 5'6! I wear a size 26 in 7FAM jeans and a size 2 at BR. Are these brands seriously THAT vanity sized?!

Re: BM dress vent

  • Sometimes they go by your biggest size? Maybe your boobs are out of control?! I know my friend's hips measurement made her dress size go up a few sizes. Weird!

  • Seriously, do not worry about it.  I've been in, what, 5 or 6 weddings and I probably had a different dress size for every single one.  And my hip measurements ALWAYS are like two sizes bigger than all my other measurements on their stupid little charts.  I'm convinced that BM dress sizes correlate to absolutely nothing at all.

You are tiny.  You know you're tiny.  Don't sweat it.

  • The same thing happened to me a few years ago.  I'm 5'8 and 135lbs and they pushed me to order a 16 (I'm a 4-6 in street clothes).  When the dress came in it was SWIMMING on me and conveniently the shop made oodles more money because I needed a crap ton of alterations.  They swore I must have lost weight (nope).  I think it was all a big scam.

I got so riled up I forgot to comment on the actual size they told you.  I think SCM has a very good point, I think some of it is a racket.  Did they tell you what your measurements were so you can compare it to the sizing chart?  I can't imagine that you should be ordering anything bigger than a 4 (maybe a 6 since some of the systems are crazy).

  • I see a lot of alterations in your future.  That's ridiculous.

  • Size 16 may be a bit too much. I know those kinds of things usually run a size or 2 bigger. But it may also be your biggest measurement (probably the boobies). Dont sweat it.

  • I had to sign my life away at the bridal shop when ordering my wedding dress as my boobs were the largest measurement and they wanted me to order a dress that would have been way too big! My waist was 3 inchest smaller than the chart measurements at the size they wanted me to order. I ordered the size I wanted and it turned out fine. Take the dress somewhere else for alterations!

  • You are not size 16 according to anyone's sizing charts. They want your $$ in alterations.
  • I would go with your gut and order the size you think or one up just to make sure you have room for a few alterations. Or go and see if you can try on the dress (or one by that company that is a similar silhouette) to get a general idea of how it would look.

  • BTW....I wish I was your size now, and I don't even have a 4 month old! I'm impressed.
  • The dresses always run small, and they do measure your biggest measurement, then add some. They also want to be safe because it is being ordered. If you convince them to order smaller, then show up in two months when it comes in with a little extra weight and it's way too small, that makes them look really bad. Plus the added money of alterations :-)

But they know I'm out of state- so they aren't getting my money in them!

It's okay, it's just that it will cost extra $ in alterations. It's just dumb.

Another BM is a size 12 street clothing and had to order a size 24. WTF?

This all just gets a huge WTF from me.

  • That is insane! Can you send it back if it doesn't fit?
