Are there any breastfeeding experts on this board?

The actual BFing board on TB has not been terribly helpful...

My baby is less than two weeks old, and this is my first child.  Breastfeeding is obviously completely new to me.  I really love BFing so far, but I have a couple of questions/concerns.

My daughter usually feeds for 8-10 minutes per side.  Yesterday and today she ate for twenty minutes on one side.  Is this an indicator of poor supply or some other issue? nope this sounds totally normal, at 2 weeks they go through their first growth spurt so they nurse longer/more to increase your supply to what they need. Make sure Lucy is draining that before switching sides which will ensure you make enough

Does anyone have any recommendations for books or websites with more information on breastfeeding? kellymom.com

And, lastly, her latch is great on one side, but not the other.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there anything I can do to help the situation? L had the same thing, so she preferred one side. Just keep working on it and making sure her latch is correct, that means she gets more milk and it doens't hurt for you. Also try nursing lying down (side lying) it works great for us and is STILL the way Lucy primarily nurses. It's a nice little relaxing time for both of us. She didn't do super well latching in the normal position on the boppy

Let me know if you have any more questions! you are doing great!

  • Lol.... I found it too but couldn't figure out how to cut and paste here with the ipad I agree with pp. Aiden would seem to feed fairly quickly...no sleepy nurser here and he was definitely "snacky". The other thing my LC recommended since there were times he would want to eat in under 2 hours would be to offer the side he had finished on last and then switch to the other as opposed to always starting with the right followed by the left in my case. Does that make sense? A had issues latching on my left side and I didn't realize until I got cracked and blistered. It huuurt! Anyways, the LC. Helped with getting him to latch, apparently he would get lazy and slip off so we worked on it and I healed and he's a champ now. I used the lanolin cream for awhile but it was very thick and greasy and hurt to put on so she had me use some type of nipple butter called motherlove. I picked it up at sprouts when my samples ran out and I loved it! I also agree that I like the sidy lying position but I wasn't comfortable doing it in the beginnig since he was so small. We did a lot of football and cross cradle hold. Now we do the side lying a lot more....that's how I get my longer naps out of him during the day.

  • Thank you everyone!

Christina, you are such a huge help!  That is such a relief to hear the 20 minute feeds are normal, I was really worried.  I've been wanting to try the side lying position, but my c-section incision is still sore, so I haven't yet.  Maybe today...

I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner, its hard to get on the computer as much.  lol.  Thank you all again!

side lying *shouldn't* bother it too much just lay baby next to you and you lie on your side, it is very comfy, good luck! Let me know if you need any more help
