legal ladies (or anyone else)-what to wear?

Legal ladies, are any of you still around? I have a minor question.

I am doing some networking back in WI b/c hubby and I are planning on moving back after I take the bar.  I am going back this weekend and am meeting an associate and partner for lunch on Friday.  I initiated the lunch, and they suggested a local tavern/grille.

This is the first time I am meeting them in person.  We did an informational interview over the phone about 2 months ago.  It lasted over an hour. They both seem really laid back but still professional.  Any advice/information I read on informational interviews says you are supposed to wear a suit, but I don't want to be overly dressed (but I definitely don't want to be under dressed either).

And at this point, is it still an informational interview?  It seems to be networking/catching up. All this professional stuff can be hard to steer when you are first starting out!

Anyways, what the heck do I wear?

Re: legal ladies (or anyone else)-what to wear?

  • I'd wear a suit. I'd probably try to wear a blouse or sweater under that would look good alone so that if they were each dressed more causually I could take off my jacket. I think it is always better to err on the side of caution on these things and go dressier rather than casual. Good luck!
  • I agree with the suit with a blouse or sweater unless you know they don't wear suits on a regular basis.  I'd probably go into the meeting with the mindset of networking/catching up but have some follow up informational interview questions ready.  If you haven't done so already, you could let them know you're interested in moving back to the area and ask if they know of any other attorneys you can talk to or associations that they would recommend you join.

(P.S. I hope you know you don't have to wear a suit when we get lunch.)

  • I would wear a suit.  Most of the attorneys that I see on a regular basis wear suits everyday (or at least Mon - Thurs).  If they are coming from work, they'll probably be in suits.  You could maybe wear a pant suit to make it a little less formal than a skirt.
