I need some cake advice/inspiration please

I'm making the cake for my friend's bridal shower on 4/10 and was hoping you could offer some advice/inspiration.  She is having an Alice in Wonderland (cartoon Disney version) themed shower, Mad Hatter's Tea Party to be precise.  I was thinking of making a checkboard cake (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=checkerboard+cake&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=14228539395101657061&sa=X&ei=Da6MTeHsA8u3tgfS9NyyDQ&ved=0CEMQ8wIwBA#ps-sellers), probably with chocolate and red velvet cake.  Has anybody made a checkerboard cake before, is it pretty easy with the right pan?

As for decorating, I was thinking of using fondant, either for the entire cake or to at least make some decorations.  Perhaps maybe card shapes (heart, diamond, club, spade), and/or flowers, and/or teacups.  I could also get some Alice in Wonderland figurines, but the cheapest I've found them with shipping is $30 which is bit much for my budget at the moment.

Your thoughts?  TIA

Re: I need some cake advice/inspiration please

  • I actually teach cake decorating classes :) The pan makes it easier. I've seen it used and it seemed pretty easy.

Fondant makes everything better! (except taste) A random idea popped into my head. What if you made the mad hatters hat out of the cake? take the tiers and cut them up and stack them and fondant over the whole thing. it would actually be fairly easy. Plus you wouldnt need any extra because you can do all the details in fondant.

Sounds like a lot of fun!

  • What a cool idea.  I'd say just google around for Mad Hatter cakes or Alice in Wonderland cakes to get some ideas.  A friend of mine has used this cake pan before and made some pretty funky/cool cakes with it.  You could even just use the bottom two tiers to make a hat shape.  Good luck and let us know how it goes!  I'd love to see picture of whatever you decide to do.
