Br: bottle help, please!

Ironic that I'm asking this, since a few weeks ago I was asking for bfing help! We worked through our issues and Grier is nursing like a pro. But now she won't take a bottle. We've tried having dh give her a bottle in the evening, while I pump. Sometimes, she'll take an oz and other times she won't take any of it. Tonight, the second dh put the bottle in her mouth, she started crying and got herself so worked up that she threw up :( I put her on the boob and she calmed right down, though, I was pretty empty because I had just pumped. Any tips or bottles that I should try? We've tried dr browns and avent. She won't take a paci, either (unless she's full to the gills, but still wants to suck). Poor girl, has to learn to like the bottle because she'll be in daycare and I work too far away to nurse her on my breaks.

  • Breastflow, Tommy Tippee, or Playtex drop-ins are all supposed to be good for breastfed babies.

  • Jovie has always refused bottles and still does, but the one time I needed her to take bottles because I was in the hospital, she did good with the Playtex drop-ins. They are the cheapest too, so if it doesn't work you aren't out much. I never did try the Tommy Tippy bottles, but it is the only sippy Jovie will use. Good luck!
  • Will did well on the Breastflow bottles.  He started out liking any kind of bottle, but then got the hang of BF'ing, and wouldn't have anything to do with bottles, but we found that the Breastflow were similar enough that he didn't mind them.  Then he got to be a typical boy, and didn't care where the food came from, so long as there was food!  Good luck!

  • The MAM bottles/paci's are great. they're supposed to be like the real deal. I have a TON of the bottles, you'd just need to get the nips, or the nipples also fit in the Avent bottles. I've only found them at BRU & TRU. They were the ONLY ones El liked. they're flat(er) I think Tahsa used them too? Not sure.

  • I tried Dr Browns, Avent and some other random oens that MrsReem let me borrow but the only ones Aubrey would take were Breastflow.. We had great luck with them and they only have 1 extra piece instead of a bunch like Dr Browns..They used to only be sold at Target but I think they carry them most places now.. they are expensive (like $5/bottle) but worth it if it works- good luck!

  • I just went through this.  I have a 15 week old, and he wouldn't take a bottle for nothing.  The week I had to go back to work he was still not taking a bottle and he was crying and I was crying, I didn't know what I was going to do!  I tried every bottle, and pretty much had the whole bottle isle in my house!  What finally ended up working for me was cutting a bigger hole in the nipple.  It seemed that the ones I was trying, the milk wasn't coming out fast enough for him, and he was getting frustrated, so then he would suck harder and then "bite" the nipple compressing it so nothing would come out.  Then he would cry and fight it as if to say, that thing doesn't work, I tried!  After I put the bigger hole in it is when he started to take it better.  I also played with the temperatures, and found that he likes his a little warmer so it's more like the temperature of breast milk.  He still prefers breast over bottle, but is doing much better.  I have also heard good things about the breastflow bottles.  Good luck, it's really hard especially when you know you have to go back to work.  People kept saying to me "Oh, he'll eat when he's hungry enough."  Which was kind of annoying, and not all that comforting :)
