It was just announced on the news yesterday that our city school district will be cutting 900 jobs...400-500 of those jobs will be teachers. How does that even seem right?? I can only imagine how HUGE those classes will be now and how crappy their education is going to be.
However, last year they found the superintendents cabinet earned a combined $5.05 million dollars. One secretary there makes over $74,000 a year.
Just had to vent because I am disgusted!
Re: How is this possible?
Holy cripes! That is nuts.
And I'm sorry but a secretary making THAT much a year seems ridiculous to me. I mean I know they do some hard work and do have a lot asked of them, but I also cannot fathom someone being that much for that position.
And they wonder why they have to cut the important stuff. Grrr.
MY BLOG!
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I don't think that's crazy ridiculous money for a superintendent's secretary. They're at an administrative assistant level, they're not just answering phones. My mom was a superintendent's secretary for like 20 years. We lived in a tiny town so I'm sure she didn't make anything near that... but, in a large city, and if she was there for 20 or 30 years, I can totally buy that.
It does make me sad about the teachers being laid off though. DH has a teaching degree and these layoffs are why he hasn't been able to get a teaching job. There are literally hundreds of candidates for each teaching position that opens up. He's pretty much given up on ever being a teacher, which makes me sad.
Really, Kellie? Really? J has every reason to be upset. While you may feel it's ok for a secretary to make that much money, look at the whole picture. In a flame-worthy post, that would have been fine, but this is not one.
OP, I'm sorry you're going through this. I agree that $5 mil for administration pay is outrageous. The people in that office seem to forget WHO is making the major impact on the community and not just indirectly contributing. Is there a possibility you can look in other cities or states? Many are having the same issues, but not all. Have you looked into working at a private school?
Don't get me wrong, I agree the whole picture sucks. This is the same reason my own DH can't get a teaching job, so I really do feel the same pain as OP. I'm just saying that singling out one person isn't really fair, that's all.
I have thought about moving, but all of my family is here and I don't know where we would move to. In the south there are some "teaching mills" where they recruit from other states and give them a great one year contract then kick you out and get "fresh, cheaper' new teachers.
Another thing about the secretary, there was another secretary making the same amount of money working 3 days a week for about 4 hours a day. Her childcare was also paid for in full and she had some other perks with a ton of paid time off, vacation, etc. If they are doing their job FULL TIME then I think they should get a substantial pay....over 70 grand is a bit much IMHO.
