Where to stay in Charleston?
I've visited Charleston many times, but have never booked a vacation there by myself. DH and I want to come for our two year anniversary and we're looking for an AFFORDABLE place to stay. Everywhere I've looked has been in the $200-$300 a night range. Is there a hotel or B&B close to the Meeting St. area that's less expensive? Thanks for any advice ya'll can give!
Re: Where to stay in Charleston?
What time of year are you coming? If you are staying in the downtown area, finding under $200/night won't be easy at all. If you are willing to stay a little further away...there's a great Marriott Courtyard right on the water thats more affordable

and there is a Best Western right across the street. http://www.charlestonbestwestern.com/
They both are super close to Calhoun St which takes you right downtown and intersects w/ meeting.
The DoubleTree on Church Street right off the Market area is very nice! I'm from Charleston so I haven't booked a night there but have visited friends staying there before and a girlfriend of mine stayed there the night of her bachelorette party so I was there for a while. The rooms are very nice and you're close to everything in the downtown area you'd be interested in. I just checked, they have a book in advance save up to 20% promotion this year (appears to require full up front payment). They have an unrestricted rate section too that's slightly more expensive by only a few dollars. I didn't read all the details, but I'd assume the unrestricted rate would allow more flexibility as far as being able to cancel at some point if need be. I just chose a random weekend in August to see what came up and was able to find non-smoking king bed rooms for 170.05-189 (advance payment and unrestricted rate range). I know that's still up there in price, but if it was worth it to you to stay in that area and you want to be able to just leave your hotel and walk to most places, it's a great hotel for that price. Gives you a little more wiggle room budget wise since it will only be 200+ after taxes, not before.
There are more moderately priced hotels just over the bridge 5 minutes from downtown in Mt. Pleasant, literally at the foot of the bridge. The very first intersection you come to on highway 17 in Mt. P on the left and right sides of the road there are probably 10 hotels all ranging in price. The holiday Inn is probably the biggest and most upscale in that group of hotels. I checked their pricing and it looked like 189-199 was the going rate. There is a Hampton Inn, Sleep Inn and a few others. the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn are probably the best hotels in that area. I don't really recommend any of the others around that area.
Next to California Dreaming restaurant on the West Ashley side of the Ashley River just across from downtown are the Marriott Springhill Suites and the Marriott Residence Inn. It looks like the going rate for rooms at those are $159 and $169 (so around $180 including tax), the reviews are good on tripadvisor and other sites and best of all, you have water views--something that can't be said for the majority of hotels in the downtown historic district of Charleston. The residence Inn advertises a free shuttle to the historic district of downtown in the evenings which is nice. They're literally 3-5 minutes from the historic district, the battery, etc.
