Another church post for the EV.

We are looking for a Catholic church. All I can find when we drive around are the Ladderday Saints ones and well, we are not Mormon.

Does anyone know of any good ones in Gilbert, Mesa or Chandler?

I am not Catholic but my husband is and we got married in a Catholic church so we pledged to raise our children Catholic. I want to make sure we get into one now so that when the time comes to Baptise LO, we'll have no issues.

Thanks!

Re: Another church post for the EV.

  • For Catholic churches, you are actually 'supposed" to go a certain church and it's based on where you live.  If you want to be a member of a Catholic church and you do not live within the boundaries, you have to get permission.  At least this is how it was for years.

You can look at the diocese of phoenix website to determine which church is near you and go into the rectory to join the parish.

Just an FYI, in order to be approved to have your child baptized, you need to show you are an active member of the parish and this means you have donated enough money.

The diocese website is http://www.diocesephoenix.org/ .

  • Stacy- Check out St. Timothy's on Alma school/  between Baseline and Guadalupe I have heard nothing but good things about this Catholic church

No, that's for LDS churches. Catholic churches do not have boundaries set up.

Stacy - we go to St. Ann's on Elliot between Gilbert and Lindsay. I really like the church. You have to be a registered member for 6 months though before you can do a baptism.

It's probably true for many religious sects.  I know it used to be true for Catholic churches, at least in the last few years because I have had to request an exception to the boundaries to join a church.  Some churches are VERY strict and some will allow anyone who wants to attend the church to do so.

  • this is bad of us, but when we DO actually make it to church we go to Mount Carmel in Tempe. Fr. John is one of the kindest people I've ever met.

as for the rest of the east valley, i was going to suggest St. Tim's as well. Matt's family goes there weekly.

Is that just an AZ thing because that's def. not how it was in NY!!

We actually experienced it in PA too.  We were in the boundary of the church but only because another church closer to us closed.  But the churches where we lived were experiencing a lot of closures because of low membership so I think they agreed not to "steal" members from other areas.

Here though I had to have the permission of the Pastor of the church in order to go to a church that I wasn't within the boundaries of.  Thankfully he agreed but not until after he made me "explain" myself.  Some churches really adhere to the boundaries and some don't.

  • That's weird with the boundaries. There are 2 Catholic churches closer to my house, but when I joined St Ann's nothing was said and they welcomed me with open arms. I've just never heard of having to join a Catholic church that was considered to be within your boundaries.

  • this just sounds so weird to me. why does the church care where you live? if you choose to go to a particular church, then should that be YOUR CHOICE??? just weird.  we haven't had a problem with any of the churches we've attended.  we live in Phx and when we go to church, we go to Mt. Carmel. We got married at St. Joan of Arc which is REALLY far from us. We had to deal with some other issues, but "boundaries" was certainly not one of them.
  • I've never heard of the church boundry thing either and I've attended mass since I was born.

I attended church in one town and attended CCD at another town in another church because they finished their program earlier.  That was in NJ.

When I lived in Ahwatukee, Fountain Hills, and N. Las Vegas they never cared where exactly I lived.

Anyway, when I was in Ahwatukee, I was always recommended to St Tims, too.  I never went because there was a church closer that I went to instead.  But I've heard their congragation is real young and fun.

Yea I totally agree.  We have never had any issues either here or when I was in Cali... I honestly grew up and was pretty involved in the church and have NEVER heard of being able or not being able to join the church based on where you live.  Every church I have even been to has welcomed me/us with open arms.

Sandipluschris -  Are you sure you are talking about a Catholic Church because you said Pastor and at a Catholic Church they are Priest?  Not being accusitory just curious on the wording...

I think one of the reasons they do the boundary thing is to attempt to control the membership of each church if they need to.  If you have a VERY popular church that is pulling in a large membership, you risk having other churches in the area close and this costs money. In PA we saw the closing of several churches as the area was predominantly Catholic and the church memberships have dropped.  I worked for the Catholic church for years and that's the reason they did it back then.  As I said, not all churches will enforce it but I do believe the Pastor has the authority to enforce it if he chooses.

Yes, Luv, it is the Catholics.  The pastor is the priest who runs the parish.  He will make all final decisions for the parish.  Then there are associate pastors and on down the line.

  • Here is the link to a church that restricts membership based on boundaries.

     http://staphx.org/parish_boundaries.php

I have no idea how to make it clicky - sorry!!

This is how it was where I grew up in Nor Cal too, you were assigned a church based on where you lived.  I do think it was a boundary control thing, it was a very busy area!  It is not like you couldn't go to another church, but I think you had to get permission or something, I was not the one choosing the church (I was in high school and younger) but I remember that.

Yeah, you can certainly GO to any church you want but each parish has the 'power' if you will to deny you membership.  Not all will, but it does happen.

  • We love Christ the King Catholic Church in Mesa.  It's near Broadway and Stapley.  They seem to be very welcoming to everybody. =)
