Random Question Re Playmats

My house is all hardwoods and tile and now that Gabrielle is really starting to move around I was thinking I need to get those rubber playmat tiles to soften the floor a little.  Well I was looking on the Zulily site and they have several "tadpoles" set on sale.

There are three different patterns that I was thinking about any wanted to see what you ladies thought:

Option 1: Colorfulish yet neutral and educational with the letters and numbers

Option 2: More neutral and unisex and heck .. I like dogs :)

Option 3: Very neutral and would blend in with hardwoods but not fun for kids

Re: Random Question Re Playmats

  • I like the dog one! But be careful if those paw parts pop out for chewing/choking issues.

We picked up brightly, primary colored sets at Sam's Club for $20 for 8 squares. Cheap, easy, and replaceable easily at that cost!

    Hate option 3!

    I like options 1 & 2.

We have something similar to what Michele described (primary colors).  No idea where we got them, as they are 10+ years old from when DD1 was little.

  • LOVE the dog ones!!!
  • If I had to do it over again, I would get bigger squares.  We had the alphabet ones similar to the first ones you posted from BRU.  As he got older he'd tear them apart, then crap gets under them (dust bunnies and whatnot.. and I don't even let peeps wear shoes in the house) and it's a pain.

     Just my opinion :)

    I do like 2 though :)

  • We have bright colored playmat sets that cover the entire playroom. letters, numbers, shapes, plain colors, and a piano (yes, it's musical!... but the black lines weren't part of the foam, and started peeling... so it's now drawn on with a sharpie)

And, until I can find an area rug that I love for Shannon's room, we actually have a hardwood-looking one for her bedroom (even with the bed rail in place, she's fallen out of bed once, and I wanted something to slightly cushion in case she falls again). Her room is so much fun and so bright, that I didn't want to put something on the floor that I didn't love, and didn't want this to detract from the rest of her room. This works for now.

Of the ones you have posted, I love the educational ones. The paw print ones are cute too :)

  • Thank you for the responses!!  I probably should just suck it up and get the really colorful ones.  I do like them for kids areas, the problem is due to the size and layout of my house (cape) ... it looks like I'm going to have to turn our living room into a kid play room.  I think I was thinking if I went with something a little less vibrant and more neutral it would turn my main floor into kid central.  All in all, I want a fun safe place for Gabrielle to play.

  • Since your house is laid out in a way that will be putting kids stuff front and center, go neutral (at least for now)... The good thing about the ones you posted is that since they are all the same brand, they should be interchangeable, so you could mix sets. But, do be aware that even as early as 8 months old or so, my son could pull the pieces up and everything went into his mouth. We sometimes "lose" letters or pieces among all the other bright colors of the toys/floor. If the mats were more neutral, they'd be easier to spot among the kid things :)
