Spring Cleaning!

Do you do spring cleaning? If so, what's the major things you do? I'm making a list of what all we need to get done tomorrow.

As busy as we both are and as often as we entertain, it's sometimes hard to keep up with everything and it's even harder to get DH to help. BUT, since I didn't get to go see Cats this weekend he has agreed to do major cleaning with me and then take me for a massage Sunday. Smile

Any tips on getting it all done faster or organizing? Particularly my closet, which is the place people tend to throw things they don't know where else to put. I'm only hoping to get it all done quickly because we have company coming over tomorrow. Thanks!

Re: Spring Cleaning!

  • I don't spring clean.  I take the basic flylady approach and try to focus on one 'zone' at a time, cleaning plus a little organization, then I move on to the next area the next time.

For your closet, measure the dimensions and grab a couple baskets, then re-group the stuff in there that doesn't have a proper home somewhere else and stick it back in.  For example, medium basket for hats and small stuff, a couple big baskets on the floor, one for umbrellas and stuff, the other for shoes. That swill make it look more organized.

The one lesson I have learned is not to buy the organization stuff on the store shelf until I go home and measure the space, then I come back to the store with the measuring tape to check the dimensions.

I don't do specific spring cleaning, I purge as needed throughout the year.  My best advice is to take everything out of the closet and as you go to re-organize it, make a decision to keep, toss, or donate.

What people are throwing unnecessary things into your closet?  Either find a permanent home for those things or toss/donate them.

DH enjoys putting things in my closet. And the dog for some reason likes to hide her toys in there. She's weird.

Thanks for the tips on organizing my closet, ladies! Smile

When I lived alone I wouldn't do spring cleaning, just flush out things throughout the year; but calling it Spring cleaning is the only way I can get DH to agree. He thinks "Spring cleaning, it's what people do. Guess I gotta do it, too."

    Thanks funny!

I didn't really have a plan this year, but I have a list of things that need doing so I consulted it and took care of four of them.

*clean under bathroom cabinet and wipe out drawers, I also sorted through all medications and tossed those that weren't labeled or were out of date

*scrub and polish all kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors

*wipe out drawers in kitchen and sort out tupperware

    *wash bathroom walls

*cleaned out the fridge and tossed expired condiments

Also on our list is sweeping and organizing the garage, washing all windows, washing kitchen walls,  make a list of home repairs that I need to hire someone to do.

  • we spring clean...

my main thing is getting dust out of the hard to reach areas! (i'm a little ocd, lol). so i'll move things like the fridge and furniture so i can sweep/vacuum behind them.

also clean bookshelves - you'd be surprised how dusty they can get (and what things a toddler will stick in the cracks!).

  • I'm waiting 2 weeks, until after my exams, but I'm planning on:

moving out the bedroom furniture, cleaning under the bed, reorganizing under-bed storage

washing all the curtains and slipcovers

going through the closets and dressers and donating old clothing and shoes

    dusting/washing baseboards

dealing with the stained grout int he bathroom

fixing a small hole in the drywall

    organizing/selling books and DVDs

completely cleaning out my desk drawers

    cleaning our communal laundry

moving and cleaning behind the fridge

    replacing the AC filters

I'm going to break it up by room and do it over several weekends.
