TruGreen/Environmental question

Hi, I'm a regular over on PCE and a couple other boards but thought this would be a good place to come for this.  DH wants to use TruGreen to treat our lawn, but we live on a corner that has a street drain that empties into the Chesapeake.  I'm concerned about the chemicals they use and whether it's safe/a good idea given the possible runoff.

Anyone know more about this?

Why does he want to do it? Do you have a lot of lawn? The best way to avoid chemical treatments is to reduce the lawn size. Get rid of as much turfgrass as possible, plant a wide variety of native trees and shrubs, and don't treat the soil or the foliage with anything- no fertilizer and no pesticide.

  • It's a small lawn, in a neighborhood of townhouses. We just want the grass we have to be fresh and green again. We've also got some weeds. We might put our house on the market as well, so he thinks we'll need to treat it for that anyway We don't use any fertilizer or pesticides now, that i know of.

ETA: He has been spraying weed killer on the lawn and it's not working.

  • I *think* TruGreen has a "green" option that is supposed to be better - if not - maybe a local landscaping company has a program like this?  Also - if you don't want to use a program, you can always go to your local gardening center or nursery and ask them what you can use thats good for your grass and the environment!

  • We had a horrible experience with TruGreen. If you have a small yard I highly recomend doing it on your own. We've used fertilizer to help our yard grow and the grass ends up overtaking the weeds.
