Blueberries?

I am totally new to fruit/veggie gardening.  We eat tons of berries in the summer and I would love to grow our own since organic berries are super pricey, even when in-season, at the farmer's market!  I plan on growing strawberries, which I know can be easily fenced-in/covered with chicken wire.  But what about berry bushes?  We have tons of deer, bunnies, and other critters.  How would I protect a berry bush?  Or are they usually so prolific that the critters couldn't possibly eat all the fruit?  Any suggestions?

Re: Blueberries?

  • I just put netting over my berries.
  • I started an edible garden right off my back porch and included 2 blueberry bushes. I would think the close proximity to the house will help discourage any wildlife. I'm more concerned about birds and squirrels getting to my berries than the raccoons or possums since they typically don't come that close to my house.

  • Oh, and I plan on putting another variety of blueberry bush in a large pot on my porch so I have some cross-pollination. Could you put your bush in a pot? That might help with the bunnies, not so sure about the deer.
