Walking Shoes

So I need a decent pair of walking shoes.  Obviously I'm not running anymore, and my running shoes are spent and probably not the best to walk in for excercise anymore, so I'm in need of something new.  I get my running shoes from Striders because they're usually guaranteed to have the specific motion control shoe I need (if not they order them for me), but I have a $10 off any $50 at D*ck's Sporting Goods, so I'd like to use that and same some money if possible. ***'s doesn't have a dedicated "walking shoe" section.  Would a running shoe work for walking (I usually walk 2-3 miles on treadmill), or should I stick with a specialy shoe store for my athletic footwear, where I know they'll have "walking shoes"?  I'm not looking for anything fancy like a toning shoe, just a basic shoe with good support.

Personally, I think a running shoe or a cross-training shoe would be fine for walking.  When I go for long walks with the dogs or anything along those lines, I always just wear my old running shoes and they work just fine.  If you were fitted before for your running shoes and know what you need, I think you could pick them out from D*cks on your own.

New balance has some good info on their website although I now can't find it to send you a link.  Arg.  My pedorthist urged me to get that brand, an 800 level or higher.  I need the roll bar in the bottom that some of theirs have, so my ankle doesn't wobble side to side.  They also have US made/assembled shoes which is nice in this day & age.  Most of the NBs sold at Kohls or the like are their lower numbered ones with less engineering & special features, but sporting goods stores should have something higher.

If you're really concerned about getting a good safe shoe I'd skip a big store like that and find a place with a pedorthist on staff that can help you find a shoe that will work with you instead of against you.  It is worth paying extra to not end up in PT or the Dr's office again.

I have to admit, I'm very wary of NB shoes.  I bought running shoes once, ran in them and returned them the very next day.  My feet hurt SO bad after a 3 mile run, I couldn't believe it.   This was like....3 years ago though.  After seeing someone at Striders, they turned me on to Asics.  They're a really great shoe for over-pronation issues.  I haven't bought anything but Asics since then.

I love Asics. Hate, hate hate NB. If you know what works for you, just get those.

I ended up with another Asics pair.  The people at D*ck's were actually very helpful.  I spend way more than I wanted to, but good shoes are important.
