Hello!
My husband and I are moving to the Greenville area around the first of the year. Neither one of us have lived here before and just wanting to get a sense of where NOT to live and so on! We are actually making a trip there next weekend to scope the town out. Any good restaurant recs?
TIA!
Re: Moving to Greenville
Welcome! We just moved here this summer and love it!
We live in Simpsonville, almost to Fountain Inn. I personally work in Greenville and occasionally like to go there, but sort of prefer not to live in the "big city" life. (Which is funny because Greenville feels like a big city in some ways, yet is so small and easy to get around!). We have really enjoyed Simpsonville. There is everything you need here on Fairview Road and Woodruff road not far away. We live next to Heritage Park which is beautiful and hosts a few events a year in their amphitheatre. If I was house shopping again, I would also suggest the "Five Forks area". In my opinion, I would avoid anything off of Woodruff road. The traffic on that road is ridiculous! Our realtor always took us the back way so I didn't realize how bad it could be...and now I'm so grateful that we didn't buy along there. But again, you may prefer to be close to all those shops and I don't commuting just a bit to get to them.
As for restaurants--they have everything you could imagine here! We try to go to a new restaurant once a week and I still have a list a mile long. The only thing we don't have (I think) is a Cheesecake Factory.
When we came to visit for a few days to decide where we wanted to live, we stopped by a realtors office and asked them some questions. They gave us a giant map. So we would drive around and I would make notes on that map like a star if I really liked the area/subdivision or I would cross it out if I hated it. That was helpful when we got back and where looking at houses online.
Good Luck! The housing market here is great so I think you'll have no problem finding exactly what you want.
Thank you! We love trying new restaurants too! DH is a chef with Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and that's why we are moving. (they are opening one in the new embassy suites being built).
We will probably just rent an apartment for now because we don't know how long we are going to be there, we have been told probably over a year but not quite sure because he is going to be going to another property once it gets built.
I don't think I would want to live off of Haywood Road either...its ridiculously busy too.
There is a pretty cool apartment complex that used to be a mill...I'm drawing a blank about the name though. Its not Mill's Mill...those are condos. I might would check Craig's List for apartments.
The food in Greenville is amazing. Downtown has about all you might need. Soby's and Trio's are awesome! I love the Blue Ridge Brewery too...although that might be slumming it for your husband. They make good beer though and their menu is rather electic. There is awesome gelato place downtown now too...DH and I always go there when we are downtown.
Some other restaurants that are great are Smoke on the Water, and Saskatoon's (take your wallet...its expensive, but worth it...its off of Haywood).
In general try to stay on the East side of Greenville, and avoid Berea.
We live in the Five Forks area of Simpsonville which is down Woodruff road from all the shopping. We love it because it's far enough away to be a quiet neighborhood, but close to tons of commerce. Also we have found several ways to get to the interstate that completely bypass the congested areas of Woodruff road, so it's not bothered us at all. Additionally there really isn't any traffic there during the morning commute.
Where are they building the new hotel? That may help us make suggestions based on the commute.
Anyway welcome to the area! We're having a get together on December 3rd and we'd love to have you join. When will you be moving?
A lot of people tend to like the Five Forks area. Its right up the street from where I work. Its an area that my hubby and I are considering when we decide to look for a house.
As far as restaurants...my best advice is to just go downtown and walk around and try what sounds good! When I first moved here (years and years ago, when I was a kid), I was taking acting classes downtown. When I finished my parents and I would try a new restaurant downtown every week. Since then there are even more restaurants to try. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything down there!
Normally, the Ruth's Chris are built in Embassy Suites but this one is going in the Crowne Plaza that is being built downtown. That is about all I know right now. He has a friend that works at the Hyatt and I think we are going to meet up with him this weekend when we come visit. I really like the idea of Simpsonville but DH doesnt want to be too far from the restaurant either.
Thanks for the great recs too! We love trying new places! Being in atlanta that has been pretty easy to do but we don't really care for the social scene here. And we are Waffle House fanatics, do the Brewery won't be slumming!! Gelato sounds yummy! I can't wait for this weekend!
Awh well i'm sure we'll be having get-togethers after the new year and you'll have to join us then!
If you're looking for an apartment, I don't know your budget but when we moved here we just wanted a really cheap apartment that wasn't disgusting where we could get a 6 month lease so we could feel out the area. (we also had VERY short notice to find an apt) We wound up at Overlook apartments on Villa road. It's a great location, right between downtown and Woodruff roads basically, it's about a mile from the mall on Haywood, and it's just right off the interstate. DH's commute downtown usually took about 8 minutes.
It is NOT new, it is NOT luxury, and by most standards it's really not nice but it is one of the few affordable places we could find that offered 6 month leases. When we moved in the apartment was clean, but worn. There were some stains on the carpet that had been "patched" and they basically just covered the entire kitchen in a coat of spraypaint between residents (even the countertops get painted).
Anyway the location was really great for us, and the price is certainly right. If you're looking for a great location and a place that will give you a short-term lease, I would suggest it. I would NOT suggest it as a long-term solution though... I was VERY glad to leave there after 10 months when we bought our new house.
