Anyone know anything about camcorders?

DH & I have been looking at camcorders and are completely lost in what to buy. We have spoke with several people at different stores and it seems they all have their own preference for a brand and don't really know which is better. The one guy that we thought knew what he was talking about turned out to be full of crap and what he told us wasn't even true about the camcorder. We are looking for the best camcorder we can get for the money and really don't want to spend over $300. My H wants an HD camcorder but I know we can't get a decent one for $300 and I don't think its necessary. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

  • I just responded on FB - but ours is a Canon HD one, and I'm pretty sure my mom paid under $400 for it on Amazon.  I can't remember what the model is, but it records to either the internal hard drive or a SD card.

  • If you tell me what type of things you're looking for I can see if DH can make a specific rec. He's really into shooting video with a DSLR right now. They shoot with cannon rebels (I think) for all the reality footage on the show and he loves it!
  • We have a Flip.  I'm kind of "meh" about it.  I guess it's better than nothing.  But I wouldn't buy a second one.

I'd say do more research, but this is the way that I'd be leaning, too. The technology of video capabilities has really come far with DSLRs lately, and if you add in what different lenses can do for you, I think it's the way to go. The newer Nikons have video capabilities, too. I've heard great stuff about the D7000's video.

Plus you'd get a serious camera upgrade, and trust me, when your baby can move, you'll want something faster. It's a win-win.

  • We area really looking for a camcorder, not a DSLR. We have a camera that we are happy with (and I spent WAY too much money on) and its too big to toss into the diaper bag... for that reason, I have also been looking at small digital cameras. I just really want something small, that we will not be disappointed with the video quality.

Nicole, I know several people who have bought that camera and have never heard anyone rave about it. My stepfather bought one about 6months ago and its still in the box. I was thinking of asking him to borrow it to see if we liked it but after what you said about it, I think I am going to pass on the idea. :)

  • The flip is good for a fun in your purse camera, it doesn't have a very wide lens so you can't video yourself very well or anything too close. We actually used them during the wedding week and got a ton of awesome and fun footage. I

DH used to shoot with them for a web series they did (they use Iphones and the DSLRs now) If you view the team brunson videos, they are all filmed with Flip cams...  http://www.addictedtotheoutdoors.com/video
