We just had the heating guy here to check on our furnance because it was running loudly...I wasn't worried about it. We were told last year that it was built like a tank and should last a while. Granted it wasn't efficent.
Well, I was just told we have to get a new furnance. Good thing we already have a line of credit established and if we make some basics cuts, we can get it paid off in a few months. But still...whinning....this is not how I want to spend our money.
The guy said techinally he should tell us that we should shut the furance off....but most likely the crack in the exchange server has been there for a few months. But still, I don't want to keep it on if it is possibly letting of carbon monoxide.
Crud!
Re: FRICCKK!!!!!
That sucks! Sorry, MB.
Ok, so looking at the bright side of things....this might mean that we finally get central air. At this point in time, it wouldn't make sense not to while we were getting a new furnance. I'm guessing running central air would have to be more cost efficent than running the three separate room air conditioners we had last year.
On no! I'm sorry :-( We're gearing up to replace ours when it crokes (it's seriously 30 years old). It gives me a mild anxiety attack just thinking about it.
It probably will be more cost effective to get central air instead of running seperate units. It might not seem like it at first (the actual unit), but your energy bill should reflect the savings right away.
Oh that is definitely a good side of it, central air is SO nice and in the long run will definitely save you on evergy bills. Those window units usually suck a TON of energy!
At least by doing it now you'll get a summer or two of AC enjoyment out of it. Plus, unless it was a really good deal or had another feature I really wanted, I wouldn't want to buy a home without AC in it, so hopefully "new furnace & AC" would help you out if you have to sell your place. I have allergies & such to where I'm not supposed to have windows open, especially at night, so AC & good filters are important for me.
Stuff like this reminds me that while I found it annoying at the time, I'm really glad my dad taught me how to work on house projects like this as a teen. I hope that if we have kids I can pass on at least a little knowledge to them. I don't know near what my dad knows but I wish I did!
I agree with one of the PPs, though, that home & car repairs are two of my least favorite things about being a grown-up.
I agree with this. I bet AC would be a nice selling point, if you can swing it.
I agree, too. We didn't even look at houses without central air.
