Folic Acid

So, in preparation for my surgery and future child plans, I've started my (super gross) vitamin routine.  Daily includes your standard prenatal, a DHA soft gel and a folic acid supplement.

I'm reading mixed things on the folic acid- on one hand, it is water soluble, so you should be able to take as much as you want without issue.  However, I read (disclosure: on a bump board's FAQs) that you shouldn't have more than 800mcg per day.  Any reason why more would hurt you?

Any tricks on choking down those DHA gels?

Re: Folic Acid

  • Get the gummy prenatals and you'll never have to choke down a horsepill again! ;D

    Yes

The only downside to the gummies are they don't have iron, so you may eventually have to take an iron supplement... but they're still not horse-pill size.

  • I find the pill harder to take than the DHA gels, but they're both pretty bad if you ask me.

MB....what are these gummy prenatals you speak of?! Do they have DHA in them too?

  • From what I've read, taking too much folic acid can just hide B12 deficiencies. This is usually only a problem for vegetarians or, especially, vegans. My pre-natal has 800mcg, but I know some go up to 1000. If you're a pretty healthy eater, you're probably getting a lot of folic acid from the foods you eat too, so you're probably already over 1000, without needing an extra supplement.

  • OMG I pph gummi prenatals. They were a lifesaver!
  • Amelia and MB- Did you find a gummy with iron? I thought they didn't have iron and then I'd just need to take an iron supplement too.
  • Too much folic acid can cause flushing and a few issues, I believe, but I haven't heard of it being a problem at around 1000mcg.  Like someone else said though, you probably get a ton of folate from cereals and other foods you're eating, so 800mcg in a supplement should be plenty.  I took regular Women's One-A-Days while TTC, not prenatals, and those only had 400mcg.  My doctor at the time said that was still plenty.  I have read that you shouldn't take your prenatals or vitamins with green tea though, if you drink that, apparently something in the tea interferes with folic acid absorption.

Swallowing pills is no big deal to me, so I just take the Target brand prenatal and the Target brand DHA supplement.  The DHA gels go down pretty smooth, so I don't think they're bad at all.  DHA hasn't actually been proven to aid in baby's development but since fish oil is healthy, I know it can't hurt and my midwives agreed.

I recommend a prenatal that already has iron to fight fatigue a little (and definitely if you're borderline anemic).  Extra iron supplements contain quite a bit more iron than what's in most prenatals and tend to cause constipation. Some people find that they can just take two iron supplements a week though and do okay without getting backed up.

Rach, Target has the prenatal gummies, by the way. :)

  • I took these: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=vitafusion+gummy+prenatal+vitamins&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=16178676036762106482

and they do not contain iron, so I did take an iron supplement with it. This kept me from getting the nausea that I got with the horse-pill prenatals. Best of both worlds!
  • Thanks MB, Amelia and Tara....I'm definitely going to try these out!

I was taking them every other day until 2 weeks ago when I had to get all that blood work done and the results came back that I was *slightly* anemic.  The doctor prescribed me a supplement, and it's been great.  I haven't had any constipation issues, yet.  It's called Bifera, and supposedly it's gentler than other iron supplements.

  • I guess I was a bad mom and I didn't take any extra iron with my prenatals... ?_?

FTR Sami's blood has been fine to date, and she's taking iron supplements in her vitamins because she is/was breastfed.... Ironically, it was me who turned out to be anemic post-partum, so I try to take iron now when I can remember.

    Say whhhaaaattttt?????

I would consider you lucky that you didn't become anemic during pregnancy.  It's a PITA to take that extra pill every night. If I forget, I feel guilty.  There's been a few times I woke up at 3 am and realized I didn't take and was too lazy to roll over and do the "right thing".

Yeah, taking the prenatals were hard enough.... I also confess that towards the end, gummi or not, there were nights I forgot those too  ?_?

I'm not a creature of habit when it comes to pill taking. So like you, I have forgotten... and even worse, I didn't feel guilty. Zip it!
