I have a question about yarn. What is the best yarn to crochet a baby blanket? I want to make this blanket (for a friend)...
http://www.redheart.com/free-patterns/broomstick-lace-baby-blanket
...in these colors (along with a picture of some bedding that is sorta similar to what she wants; it doesn't have the orange in it though)
The pale chamois color is a little pink on the monitor, but IRL it's more of a beige-y creamy color.
I've been looking around for yarn, but not too sure what would be best for babies. I know they make the "baby" yarn, but I'm not too sure I like the texture. It seems too synthetic. I'm looking for something a little softer, but not so bulky that the broomstick lace looks wrong.
TIA!
ETA: the pale apple paint chip looks like an ugly brown green on the monitor...
, it's more of a minty pale green in person.
ETA(again): the green, brown, chamois is kinda like the green/brown wedding invitations that are/were popular, if you know where I'm coming from on that. The pictures of her nursery remind me of mint choc. chip ice cream. Plus she's accenting with the pumpkin-y orange.
Re: ~wamo~yarn?
:::Butting in:::
Are you looking for cotton or wool yarn as opposed to acrylic which is what most baby yarn is made from, I believe?

NAT! I knew other people knitted/crocheted, but I couldn't remember anyone else but wamo.
Thanks for butting in!
I'm not too sure about wool (would it be too scratchy for baby? or allergies?), and for some reason this yarn
is what I see all the time for "babies," and I'm not too big on the texture. Other acrylics would be okay, but I'm a very texture-resistant/OCD person. So, a baby may like it (WTF do I know about it), but I'd feel weird holding a baby in it, KWIM?
I've heard that this stuff is pretty good, but I'm not sure if it would be good baby yarn.
I like the texture of this, but the Michaels around here only has the bulky form of this yarn. I'm not sure the broomstick lace would look right with a chunkier yarn.
The caron yarn is pretty good for crocheted projects. I don't mind using it.
My mom is using this to make an afghan for Evie:
I like the way it feels and I don't think it feels too synthetic. I know what you mean about the synthetic feel. Sometimes it feels like they softened plastic or something... it just doesn't feel as nice as some others.
As for wool, I didn't even think of possible allergies. But they make a lot of soft wool yarns. They are bit more pricier but I notice the colors are prettier and they usually are pretty soft.

This. You pretty much summed up the way I feel about it. It feels fake. I'll have to look into the TLC baby yarn. I don't remember seeing it at Michaels...(ours is so tiny and the closest Joann's is in Pittsburgh).
Ohhh that blows...
My mom has this amazing Joann's by her. They have 3 long aisles of yarn. Amazing.
Check out their website

Only thing is, I'm not sure how soft the TLC essentials are. But I'm assuming they're fairly soft if their called TLC lol
Annnndd... if you want, I can try to pick up the skeins you need if they carry them in the stores around me. You can use those 40% coupons and it would be cheaper!

Good luck! It's always harder finding the right colors than finding the right type. Let me know if you need anything.
And sweet find on Amazon. I love Amazon. I have been addicted since we started buying stuff for the buying. You would think it was something new lol.

my favorite baby yarn is the caron simply soft. i can get it at all the craft stores (joann's, michael's, ac moore) around here in worsted, which i believe is what the pattern calls for, right? i haven't used the red heart, but if i remember correctly it's worsted. i think you're right not to want a bulky yarn for this pattern.
i also like plain cottons for babies, lion brand has cotton ease that's nice to work with, and lately i've been buying some big bags of cotton yarn at ac moore that don't seem to have a brand name, but there are 3 skeins per bag and it's like $5 or 6 for a bag. i'm pretty sure caron ss and cotton ease would come in at least some of the colors you're looking for, but those mystery cotton bags at ac moore are a total crap shoot. some days they only have one color, some days they have a bunch.
one thing i'm not sure of is the red heart the pattern uses is a variegated yarn, and do you want a variegated yarn or just to switch from color to color as you go? as far as i know, the yarns i've mentioned only come in solid.
since you can't find the caron simply soft, i would look for lion brand cotton ease. i like the look and feel of caron ss, but i like working with cotton ease better. and they're all machine washable yay
i'm not very concise tonight, sorry! too distracted by basketball.
ETA: i avoid wool for baby projects, i think it's too scratchy for a baby. even soft wools i avoid.
or... if you want to buy yarn online, knitpicks comfy is good for babies. it's a little more expensive than something from joanns etc, but it's still not too bad. all my recent baby items have been from the worsted or sport weight of that yarn. i really like knitting with it, it's so nice and soft. and they have lots of colors.
I don't have an ac moore.
I don't even know what one is. I'm very limited on where I can get my yarns. It's either the tiny Michaels in Morgantown or Walmart. It stinks.
I'd love to find a variegated yarn in those colors but I think I'd have better luck winning the lottery (and THAT hasn't happened yet.) I watched the video in the pattern to see how to do the broomstick lace--I'm a visual learner--and each row/round/whatever is one of those lacy things so I'm thinking of either switching colors as I go or even doing an almost granny square kind of set up where I do so many lace patches in each color and stitch them together. I have some left over balls that I can screw with before starting the final draft.
And thanks for all of the recommendations! I will definitely look into all those yarns and figure out which would be the best. Thanks again!
