File Cabinet alternatives?

DH and I need a file cabinet but there's no way I'm letting an ugly file cabinet mess up my dreams of a sophisticated home office.  I just got a great farmhouse style desk from CL that I'm staining the top of and painting the legs black.  I also plan on getting this as our desk chair (sorry, couldn't PIP) http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/181-4876766-4979206?asin=B003UYAQ8E&AFID=Froogle_df&LNM=|B003UYAQ8E&CPNG=furniture&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B003UYAQ8E&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001

I was thinking something along the lines of an Ikea Rast hack but I'm not sure if file folders would fit in the drawers.   Any ideas are appreciated!

ETA: I'm looking for something not too expensive, which is why we're thinking outside the box.

  • They make some to look like furniture now:

  • I was in your boat a couple months ago, until I found the Ikea Aspvik cabinet for $100:

I came up with a new binder filing system that is SO much more functional (and fun) to organize all our files.

Here's how it looks on a wall,

And here's how I organized it:

I have more pics/cost breakdown if you're interested in going this route, here and then putting the finishing touches on it here.

  • I like the IKEA Aspvik that PP mentioned.  Or the IKEA Hemnes bridging shelf.  Both are about $100.  Walmart and Target both have similar style shelves to the two IKEA models that I just mentioned.

sorry, I can't make it clicky, but I have 4 of these and they're a perfect replacement for the ugly blue file cabinet we used to have.

  • I love all of these filing cabinet ideas! Sadly we have a just a modern looking filing cabinet from target (the handles are more updated looking).

I also wanted to say to the OP your salt water taffy in your siggy looks amazing. It's been forever since I've had some.

  • We have two tall file cabinets (5 drawers each).  One is an ugly metal one for all of my school work with literally every college engineering textbook and all of my paperwork in it (I'm not a hoarder I'll need all of this stuff for a professional test coming up in October).  This guy sits in the basement where no one sees it.  The other one is a nice wooden file cabinet that we inherited from DH's grandma.  You can sometimes find them on Craigslist.  I love the extra trim details on the top, bottom, and sides because they really make it look like a piece of furniture.

Eventually we'll move the office to the finished part of the basement and we plan to build a long storage area with sliding doors to hide shelving and both of these file cabinets.  Binders or small file cabinets just wouldn't work for us.  I store all of my D&R ideas and info (brochures from home expos, quotes, handwritten ideas, fixture specifications, etc.) in there among other things so I need a lot of space!  Plus shoving stuff in a hanging folder is much easier than dealing with those staticy plastic binder inserts.  For example I keep all of our home improvement receipts organized by a folder for each month.  Not only can I keep track of how much we've spent but if we ever sell the house I'll have proof of what we invested into the house (that cost isn't taxable) or if something happens to the house I have that info for the insurance company (I also enter these receipts into an Excel spreadsheet which I periodically save to a disc and store out of the house).  Keeping good records can really pay off!

  • Really like this option. Where did the pic come from? When I click on it I don't get a webite. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.!
  • Whoops my comment didn't go to the specific pic. Bakingblonde, where did the pic come from?
