Whoops! I make my return, while spilling a glass of red wine on my laptop...

... hope nothing goes wrong with it.

Just thought thought I'd post a message to say hello - I'm an on again off again member of the Canadian nesties.

Oh and if anyone wants to help me out... I'm looking to try and understand how maternity leave works if anyone can help.  I think I understand the EI basics, but does your company ever pay you money?  Sorry, I'm a bit clueless.  And I can't really ask anyone IRL as I don't want anyone to even know I'm considering.

thanks!

  • Whether your company pays you money depends entirely on your company. Some businesses do top-ups- most don't. You would have to find out from your work, and if you really don't want to ask, then it's probably safer to assume they won't and then anything you did get would be bonus.

  • OK, I should take that back a little bit... I guess, I don't understand much as it relates to mat leave, even the EI portion.  And what/if your employer covers you, does it fall under short term disability?

short term disability: no, not that I've ever heard. Employers who cover it do so entirely out of their own pocket and will have it addressed, usually in union regulations, if you're union. It's not part of private insurance like STD is.

EI: 2 week waiting period, 15 week maternity leave, 35 week parental leave which can be divvied up between any legal parent. 55% of your gross wage, up to a maximum of $45-ish a year. When employers add to that, they will have a policy (like my employer does) that they will "top up" to X amount (mine is 85%), and to calculate that they will take your pay, multiply it out by the "top up amount" (85%, in my case), subtract your EI benefits, and pay you what is left over.
