Polishing silver

Hi,

I have tons of silver (frames, flatware and dishes). Most are sentimental items that I display. I tried to clean them with a pot of baking soda but the cleaning/shine does not last long. I also used a tarnish remover without gloves and I am still having issues typing (my hands were burnt!!). I am looking for some product that does not smell horribly, does not burn my skin and that polish and  shine my flatware for a couple of month. I heard about Stanley products, are they good??

TIA

Re: Polishing silver

  • My mom always used toothpaste.  The white paste-type, not a gel.

Or there is some kind of dip technique we did in 8th grade science class.  Here's a link I found: http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howtos/ht/silverdip.htm

  • I've had better luck than that with baking soda.  Maybe it's climate (or something else), but i make sure to get the silver totally dry with one cloth and then i use another dry cloth to go over it again, just in case.  If you aren't making sure to dry them thoroughly, that's worth a try.

  • I just got this today from Martha: A simple chemical reaction causes tarnish to disappear naturally. Place sterling or plated silver in an aluminum pan -- it must be aluminum. Sprinkle 1/2 to 1 cup baking soda over the silverware. Keeping the pan in the sink to minimize splashing, pour enough boiling water to cover the utensils. When the tarnish disappears, remove the silverware, and buff with a soft cotton cloth.
