How did you find your apartment?
My SO and I are currently looking for an apartment in the loop.
We moved to Lakeview ~9 months ago from out of state and used Chicago Apartment Finders. Looking back, I feel as if we settled for an overpriced unit simply because 1) we were on a very strict timeline 2) we were young and new at this and 3) it was simply what we were being shown.
So how do you recommend we go about our next search? Our lease is up this summer, so do you suggest we search the net? Browse in person? Hire someone?
TIA!

We're thinking about looking for a new apartment, so I've done some poking around on my own, mostly on realtor.com. You can also look up building managers and some of the buildings themselves on yelp, which I've found very helpful. We used Apartment People when we moved here, our experience sounds like yours ;-) Our place isn't overpriced, but (surprise!) there's no AC and no yard, which were things on our list of must-haves.

We've walked about neighborhoods we like and looked for signs to call, craigslist, Homestead Group, Apartment People and Chicago Apartment Finders.
Although we used all of the above, the apartments we've actually signed for have all been from Craigslist (2 apts), except for our current apartment, which we found via Chicago Apartment Finders (CAF).
I actually think we got a steal for our apt and it's features (fenced in yard, brand new kitchen, neighborhood, etc) from CAF.
Good luck!

I would HIGHLY recommend going with an apartment broker or realtor who also deals in rentals. We moved to Chicago last fall and didn't know if we wanted South Loop, West Loop or Loop. We had a realtor take us to almost 15 places. He was so amazing at choosing what we wanted, we had a hard choice to make. He took us to as many places and neighborhoods as we wanted and he knew the buildings inside and out. I would recommend it to anyone who is searching. It took so much stress off of me.
We ended up in an apartment building in the Loop and we LOVE it. I'd also recommend our building to anyone who's looking. If you're interested in the name of our realtor or our building, send me a PM!
I feel you on the no AC. We are on the third floor--it was 103*F the weekend we moved in (without an elevator).
It is good to hear someone had a positive experience with CAF.
I remember stressing how important the commute was (we needed it to be less than 20 minutes), and our guy would drive us to a place that was significantly longer and I would have to reiterate this stipulation and ask him to drive us to the next place. Argh!
I suppose if we make our must-haves VERY clear before CAF takes us anywhere we might have a more productive experience.

Everyone welcome.
hotpads.com!!!!!!
It's truly the best and gave us the best deal. You would have to do a lot of the calling, but I tried Apartment People and ICM, and other management companies or companies that help you find apartments and they showed us apartments that were consistently $300 to $400 more than we were wanting to spend and we were about to give in and then we went to Hotpads.com and found our dream apartment at the price we wanted. I've also had other friends that have had great luck. Check it every day for a week or so and you'll find something you like. There are always new apartments popping up.
