can you spare some t&p's

My sister and all of her co-workers who are Librarians in her school district were just demoted to part time today. The district didn't want to raise property taxes by $40 a year (which I can understand) and the other teachers didn't want a pay freeze (to keep all employees on full time and no permanent layoffs). I know my sister and her family will be fine, but I am not sure about her co-workers. Any thoughts/prayers/vibes that you can send their way would be appreciated.

Re: can you spare some t&p's

  • It's a very difficult and scary time for schools right now. It is such a fine line with taxes too since superintendents want the budget to pass and not turn the community off. We spread our raise out over two years so essentially took a pay freeze to help save jobs, and our district still had to slightly raise taxes. Good luck to your sister and her coworkers.

  • T&P are on the way! It's tough, and I know how important education is, it breaks my heart when the schools can't financially do all they want for the kids.

  • Sending lots of T&P!!!  Maybe I understand it wrong, but it seems a little selfish that the other teachers aren't willing to freeze pay and because of that, other people are losing money and possibly their jobs.

  • Sending lots of T&P's. All these school cuts make me sometimes think if I did the right thing by staying home(I totally don't regret staying home at all, just thinking of the future, I'm very blessed for us to be financially ok for me to stay home and I wouldn't trade it for the world, just so this is clear), I'm afraid for when I'm ready to go back to teaching, possibly even in the fall, it's going to be SO hard to get a job, because of these cuts. It's happening everywhere and every state. Some SD are cutting out such crucial items to students as well, it's such a shame.

Tania, you do understand it correctly. The other teachers are benig selfish in my opinion and the only people getting hurt by this are the children. There were other layoffs, demotions and permenant layoffs yesterday as well. My sister and I have joked around saying when it comes time for our kids (13 months apart) to enter school she will need to home school them to ensure they receive a good education.

  • T&Ps on the way.  Can't believe she and her coworkers got demoted because people wouldn't agree to a pay freeze.

  • As far as refusing a pay freeze goes, a lot of it has to do with the trust the district has with their district office and superintendent. If they have been led on before they often feel taken advantage of. A district near me was told last year that if they took a partial raise no one would be laid off. They did this and many people were still laid off. This year they were asked to freeze pay and refused since it didn't work last year. Also, sometimes they will refuse a freeze because the teachers want silly things cut that the higher ups think are important as opposed to teachers or services that impact kids more. If the super wont commit to what will stay or go others can be suspicious. So in this novel, what I'm trying to say is that trust in your superintendent is huge.

  • Puggs, good luck next year if you decide to go back. I'm sure you're a great teacher so in an interview would do well. I would think looking in a less desirable area might offer some more job opportunities. It is definitely not a great time for schools though, but they will bounce back.
