regrowing scallions/green onions

This really, really works!  and fast!!  Now, that's a money saving tip :-)  We use a lot of scallions in our house!

That's a great idea.  We too are scallion-fanatics.  How long does it take to grow a new scallion?

  • How much light do they need?

  • I stuck the roots in a mason jar and put it on a windowsill that gets a sunlight most of the day.  They've grown about 3 inches in less than a week!  I'm guessing the sun speeds the growth, so the more sun the faster they grow?  (I'm totally making it up, but it sounds good, right?)

  • Awesome! I have a few leftover from the party that will go bad before I get a chance to use them! Hate spending money on scallions, herbs
  • Yes! We do this too - they grow very quickly and it's so easy. I try to do it with the thicker scallions, if that makes sense - the thinner ones get too thin, since they grow out from the center.

Boy, they do grow fast - I put some in last night and can already see where they've grown!  Can you keep re-growing from the same one?

I have no idea, but I would guess since it's sort of like nurturing cuttings from a plant, right?  I think I read to snip the roots if they get long.
