Those who don't use plastic bags

How do you divide things in bulk?  We buy a lot of meat, cheese, etc. in bulk and divide it and put it into ziplocs for freezing.

I have tried to put meat in tupperware or reusable containers, but freezing either cracks the tupperware or gives my stuff freezer burn, due to the air surrounding it.

Thanks!

Re: Those who don't use plastic bags

  • We do use some plastic, but generally try to avoid it.  One way is to wrap in freezer paper and foil, though that doesn't provide as sure a seal as freezer bags.  We also use jars (as long as its not all liquid and/or you leave space for it to expand, it's fine) and glass storage containers.

  • We use glass containers and ziplocs. Ziplocs get reused.

    Pyrex :) Lots!

Similar to EGM, we use a TON of the glass costco containers with silicone and plastic lids. We use them for pretty much everything.

  • I wrap meat and cheese in freezer paper sealed with freezer tape (in paper goods aisle).
  • I'll be honest, we use a FoodSaver.  So yes we're using plastic.  But we have a year's supply of food in our freezer, it's just not possible to use Pyrex.  They're too expensive and take up too much room.  We do use Pyrex for freezing food we will eat soon, like soup.

We do this too.  H hunts and fishes and there's no way we could possibly store all of that meat in glass containers.  I just make sure I'm overly conservative on the amount of plastic and use the absolute least possible to make a seal.

My grandma did this when I was a kid, it's something I started doing when I began reducing plastics in my house. I still back up chicken, but everything else gets wrapped in freezer paper and taped.
