Currently Kiley eats jar food, I've been thinking about making my own, but I'm not sure if I want to do it or not. I really want to be 100% sure that it's way cheaper, like I hear to make your own food. So my question is, did you make your own food, why or why not? Moms to be, will you make your own food, why or why not?

I have made it and I do think it is cheaper and it is easy. If I stayed at home I likely would have kept it up. One of my hang ups was that I was worried about him not liking something and then I had a whole tray of it so I wanted to just get a jar to try it and then I ended up succombing to the easiness of jar.

He did not like my sweet potatoes b/c they were too thick, I shoudl have blended longer and no amount of BM I added thinned it out enough for him. He liked my peaches and plums though!

 As you probably know, you can use ice trays - I went ahead and bought these. I actually have them still if you want me to send them to you. I just froze them overnight and popped them into ziplock freezer bags and they were free for the next food.

I just bought a cheapo steamer tray from target or walmart and then used my food processor and poured into the trays - easy peasy.

Jeez, hogging this post. But I think it's cheaper b/c for example, I bought one sweet potato that made 12 oz for either the same price or less than a two pack of sweet potatoes that is 4 oz each. But then you have to factor in your time and patience. :P

Wow, just saw FB - way to start the debate - its inevitable when you talk about anything like this anymore, it drives me nuts how it always goes that way! I didn't see the comments that were deleted but I can only imagine based on the other woman's responses.

We made our own, it was cheaper for us because it was often foods we would have been making for ourselves anyhow. So we would just prepare a little extra. We also did the ice cube trays. It was fairly easy to do a didn't require a lot of extra prep. Plus I liked knowing she wasn't getting extra preservatives, it was all fresh food.

i buy earths best when it's on sale 20 jars for $10. i don't have the time or the patience to make my own. or the freezer space for that matter. at the moment i dont even have space for a damn frozen dinner b/c of all the frozen milk.

I'm late to the post, but I made a lot of my own. I would make a lot up on weekends and just freeze them for use later. I do think it is pretty easy to do and cheaper. I also knew I would have a larger variety of foods that were organic to give to Xander.

Like Summer I justed used my food processer and I already had a steamer insert. I have a different cookbook if you want to borrow it, I can't think of the name off of the top of my head.

Xander loved my sweet potatoes (I found using water to thin them out worked best), bananas which I just mashed, potatoes, carrots and most of the fruits. I would even send packages into daycare and get the empty containers back at the end of the week.

Depending when you decide to start Oliver on solids you could start making some foods and freezing them now. Some can stay frozen 3-6 months.

Does that answer your Q, Puggs? lol! I made sweet potatoes once and he didn't like them, so that was it for my homemade baby food. Later, I made yams and he loved those. I realized that the "sweet potatoes" he's been eating in the jar taste a lot more like yams than actual sweet potatoes.

Well, we make our own food technically, but not in the traditional sense - we have never done purees. In our case it was cheap because she is eating the same things we are so we're not really buying anything new or extra. We go through stuff faster, but the most biggest thing that makes a difference is the hormone free meat and organic veggies (we didn't do them as much before).

I am late to this. I have always planned on making my own. One family I nannyed for had me doing this for the kids lunch and it was not that hard. It also seems cheaper and I like knowing more about were their food will be coming from. I will be a SAHM so that will make things easier.

We still use purees b/c we put it in his yogurt and oatmeal, so we shy away from the combos w/ meat or grains.

Wow. I have to start paying attention to their sales more. Do you buy it in the packages of 12? I feel like there's always some type in there that Jacob won't like or we don't need (like banana). We still use purees b/c we put it in his yogurt and oatmeal, so we shy away from the combos w/ meat or grains. 

i made the mistake of buying the variety pack once and you are totally right. there is always one type that she won't eat.  so now i buy them individually.  

she hates pretty much any type of meat one except for the apple turkey cranberry or the vegetable turkey. she thinks the apple turkey cranberry is like the best thing EVER so we buy tons of that.  we call it 'thanksgiving dinner.' LOL

she loves the pumpkin apple, sweet potato cinnamon, and carrot tomato.

otherwise, she'll eat any vegetable or fruit. she loves it all.

i do buy the whole grain ones for instances where i know we'll be out or it'll be difficult to make her oatmeal. i bring her to work with me till 10 on mondays and sometimes it's just too annoying lugging the oatmeal, BM, bowl, etc... along with all my other crap.

other than that, we give her fresh fruit but we haven't ventured out into giving her much more than that yet.  i was planning on waiting till 8 months.

So funny, Campbell is the same way about the meats - did not like jarred meats one bit but the EB Chicken and Apples, he loves. If you mix something with apples, he'll eat it! And he loved the pumpkin and apple! I've never seen the turkey apple cranberry around here

And I do the exact same thing with the whole grain ones/oatmeal mix ones - if know Nick is doing his breakfast on the weekend if I have somewhere to be (since he never gets the ratio of liquid to oatmeal right) or if we're going to be out and about for breakfast.
