Spin Class Regulars (Chicklit?): Advice, Please

I saw spinning mentioned in another post, and I've noticed that it seems like in the past couple of weeks several casual acquaintances have mentioned they love their spinning class.

So, if you're a spin fan--tell me, what do you like about it?  Do I need padded pants?  Have you noticed any physical improvements from the class (weight loss, muscle toning, whatever)?

My fella just starting taking spin class (that is, he's gone to one class), and I can join him for a reduced price at his gym.  He liked it, but his fitness level & attitude are different than mine.

Re: Spin Class Regulars (Chicklit?): Advice, Please

  • What I like is that I can set my own workout.  There is an instructor that pushes you, but if you're having an off day you can work lower.  Or if you aren't in top physical shape you can tweak it to your level.  I work out with a trainer 3 times a week, so I have lost weight, but more than anything from spin I can tell that my endurance has improved a ton!  I ran a 5k with no training at all.

You do not need padded pants. But for the first few times your butt will be sore.

  • Go with him! I got into it a year ago (and then took a long, long break) through a friend. I found that really helpful to have someone to show me how to set up the bike, change gears, clip on the strappy things if you don't have cycling shoes, etc.

For most classes, you won't need any special equipment. You can buy cycling shoes that clip into the bike and a pair of padded pants, but I've yet to get either. Without the padding, your bum will be a little sore, but I don't find it really uncomfortable. I use my old running shoes and get a bike with the little strappy things on the pedals.

I like spinning because it feels like an intense workout in an hour. I feel good when I leave. And I like that each class will be a little different, so I don't feel like I'm doing the same thing over and over. I had to try a few classes before I found a couple of instructors that I really liked at times that I could manage.

I'm doing weight watchers, running, and spin classes so I've seen results, I'm just not sure how much is from spin class.

Please report back if you try it out!

  • I've done them in the past and I really like the class I take. You can tailor it to your fitness level. I definitely noticed a change in my endurance when I took spin consistently. When wear my heart rate monitor I burn around 700 calories in a 45 minute class. I like the RPM class from Gold's gym. They have a group cycle too but I prefer RPM. In RPM there are 9 tracks and in each track your doing something different. I need to have that structure so that when I want to quit in track 5 I know there is only 4 tracks left and the last two are cooling down tracks. I never used any special equipment other than a towel.
  • I say go, too!  It is a bit daunting at first, but Chicklit is right, if you go with the BF, he can help you set up and it makes a big difference.  Way less stressful that way!

When you first start out, and they talk about setting it to "2 past drag" or whatever the term of the class is - you set the tension to you, and you can make the workout as hard or easy as you want it to be. I love that - because while I love the classes and getting into the spin/rhythm with the class, sometimes my legs are burnt the heck out.
