About a year and a half ago, I got a Canon Rebel XS.  I've really enjoyed my camera - haven't bought any new lenses for it but I have wanted a new one for a while.

MIL has been saying since I got mine that she wanted a new camera - I gave her a lot of advice I gleaned from this board, actually!

Well, last weekend they went and bought a Canon D60.  I'm jealous and just having a little pity party.  She has way more time to learn the camera than I'll ever have and she's probably going to be photographing better shots of my DS when she's babysitting him...

Do you think she will she actually learn to use it? Because if she's only going to use the kit lens in auto with the pop-up flash firing, then there really isn't any reason to be jealous.

I have a Rebel XS and still have soooo much to learn (and I use it almost every day). It's obviously not the best camera on the market, but it can do an awful lot.  It sounds like you just need time to practice - I take my camera everywhere and take photos of random things. I take it outside at lunch and snap away when I can't think of anything else to shoot.

Also, think of it this way - your MIL is just now getting a nice camera at this point in life. You're already ahead of her by a year and a half and have decades and decades to take photos of DS. She's probably lamenting that she didn't capture your DH at this age.

 At least you will get lots of good pictures of DS out of it!
