In case you didn't read my posts about my new job, I've been going in for a couple hours each day, after I get out of my current job. I'm at the new job from 3:30-5pm. I know it sounds silly, but they thought it might be a good way to start to learn my position right away.
My grandfather passed away & his wake is scheduled from 5-8pm on Friday. I get out of the new job at 5pm & it would take me a good 30-45minutes to get to the funeral home from the new job.
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to already tell new job that I can't come in. It's kind of a waste to go in & ask to leave early.
I was not super close with my grandfather. My main reason for wanting to be there the whole time is to offer support to my mom. She's having a hard time with it.
So, what would you do? Arrive late to the wake or not go into work?
Re: WWYD?
If the new job is NOT paying you right now, skip out of work early.
If the new job IS paying you and you have something to learn until 5 on Friday, then go to the wake late.
This.
I'm sure they would have no problem. They seem like a very understanding company. I feel like I'd be making a bad first impression.
Personally, I don't think it would be making a bad impression. You're asking for the day off for the wake of a relative, not to hit up the beach or take a long weekend. It's an uncommon situation that just happened to occur right now, with bad timing that can't be helped. If it's important to you to be there for your mom, I would just ask to only come in for an hour that day or something.

I know. That's the problem. That's why I wanted to see what everyone else would do in this situation.
I agree 100%. It's not like your going on vacation, you're attending a wake.
Ditto all this, you would not be making a bad impression at all.

I would say ask to leave early. As PP you are not doing something fun and trying to skip out of work early.
This is actually happened to me once.I had just started a new job and maybe a week or 2 later my grandma passed away so I had to leave early on day to go to the wake and I did not come in the next day for the funeral. They were fine with it, and if they weren't that to me would say alot about them. You can't plan certain things in life. Go be there for you mom.
