What are your thoughts on this particular diet?

Re: HCG Diet??

  • Not a huge fan since it is not particuarly healthy. Only 500 calories? I don't know alot about it but what I have read it doesn't seem like the weight would stay off very long after you stopped it.

  • My FIL tried to convince DH to do this.  I just rolled my eyes and suggested he get on the treadmill.  Stuff like this is not safe.

  • I had never even heard of this diet until a few weeks ago when it seemed like all the ladies at my tennis club were on this diet, and several of them don't even look like they need to be on a diet.  In all honesty though, one lady did lose a bunch of weight and looked terrific, but was afraid she would gain it back once she started eating a normal diet again.  A lot of the women couldn't stay on it because they were tired all the time and you could tell they just didn't have any energy on the court.  Plus they were crabby.  It seems like a huge fad right now, but not one that's healthy or easy to stick to especially if you're an active person at all.
  • My thoughts are that fad diets don't work. It's unhealthy. If people want to lose weight I always suggest eating less and moving more. Works everytime. :)

The people I know who have done the diet have not been able to keep the weight off because the diet doesn't teach you how to maintain your weight loss.

  • Don't do it.  I had to talk my aunt out of going on this diet just last week.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Yeah, a girl that I work with ( we used to be good friends) has always been overweight since i've known her,and she's on this diet now. She said she's not doing the drops just sticking with the meal plan and she has lost like 15 or more pounds in the last 3 weeks. While she looks good, I think that what she's doing is a major mistake and I hate to say it but I know she will gain it all back plus some.

She's always on a diet and she never does it the healthy way. She used to take diet pills and then drink a slim fast for breakfast or lunch and then have nothing else the rest of the day. She's only doing it because she's getting married next month for 3rd time so she wants to be skinny for this wedding.

If she wants to lose weight so bad I really wish she would do it a healthier way but to each their own I guess!

I'm not the one doing it, there is no way I could survive on 500 calories! I'll just sweat my butt off in the gym if I want to lose a few pounds!

  • I would be a miserable, pissy person if I was only eating 500 calories a day.

Agreed!  Everyone I know who has maintained a significant weight loss (excepting two people I know who had weight loss surgery) did it by being conscious of their eating and busting their butts working out.  I have never known anyone to have done it by trying wacky fad diets.

  • In a word--ridiculous.  One of my coworkers did it last year and I remember her lunch--a little chicken breast, a crunchy pretzel/breadstick looking thing, and an apple.  That's all.  Every.single.day.  That's no way to live!!  And of course people lose weight, they're eating freaking 500 cals a day!  That's starvation, not healthy living.  DH's cousin just finished the diet and I laughed out loud the time she told me she's not suppose to exercise b/c the diet works better if you don't. Yeah, that's always a good sign.  One of my other coworkers did it this year and she quickly stopped doing it b/c her family told her she was acting like a different person--cranky, tired, etc.--just not acting like herself.

This diet doesn't teach a person about portion control, exercise, eating less-moving more, the importance of fiber, fruits, veggies, etc, etc.  It teaches you how to starve yourself.

I think it's the latest quick fix diet out there and once people FINALLY realize it doesn't work long-term, then some other quick fix diet will come along.  As someone who has battled my weight my whole life, even I know that a diet will never work long-term---only a lifestyle change will.  Since I know what it really takes to lose weight and keep it off, these fad diets really piss me off and it ticks me off when people brag about their weight loss due to one of these diets.
  • 500 Calories?? That's insane! That's less than the average anorexic eats (if you google anorexia it says the average anorxic consumes 600-800 calories). That can't be healthy!

  • I know some people who have done it and it really worked for them and it changed their lifestyle to eating better/eating less.  Now, I am not a fan of the calorie intake because someone eating that little, well it is kind of scary.  You cannot do any physical activity, such as working out.  In my opinion (and the people I have known on it) did it for a few months, lost a lot of weight (it eats away the fat) and then stopped and just kept eating healthy and continuing on with activity.
  • I am totally against this diet. I think it is a big crock. 500 calories a day; really? I mean come one if you only eat 500 cals/day your going to lose weight with or without a drop or shot.

I have a friend who did this as a quick fix and of course after she got off of it and started eating more but still a good diet she gained alot of her weight back. I have also heard that you could have a stroke from this diet-to me its so not worth it.

  • I know! I should mention that she's also doing P90x while on this fabulous 500 calorie/day diet. I think she has to be the biggest idiot ever but you can't tell her anything at all because she acts like we are picking on her and she just completely shuts down so thats why we arent as good of friends any more.

My BFF that also works with us, hired a personal trainer last year and went from a size 16/18 down to a size 4/6 and looks amazing! When she found out that this other friend is on the diet I thought she was going to kick her ass! She is so pissed that she's taking the easy way out and could potentially hurt herself instead of doing it the right way.

I think the only reason she's doing it is because it's a quick fix and she doesn't want to take the time to do it the right way.
